http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,728 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 7/3/14 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of 7/3/14.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's   Barron's & Investor's Business Daily; the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall Street Journal & the Financial Times; & Sunday's & Saturday's New York Times &  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Thursday at 17068.26 up 92.02 or 0.54%   from Wednesday's close of 16976.24. For the year the Dow is up 3%. Of the Dow components  27  gained and  3   declined.   The biggest gainer   dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Goldman Sachs up $2.57 or 1.54%. The biggest decliner   dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Johnson & Johnson down 44 cents or 0.42%.

IBD pB8 "Stocks peg moderate gains in slow, pre-holiday trade" by Paul Whitfield says stocks advanced steadily Thursday wrapping up a holiday shortened week.  Thursday's action was up in lowr volume and the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

WSJ pB1 "Stocks are picking up speed" by Chris Dieterich, Tomi Kilgore says the Dow's jump above 17000 came on the heels of a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing US employers added 288,000 jobs in June well above the 215,000 expected by economists.  The unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 6.1% from 6.3% a month earlier.

Fri. NYT p9 "The Wall St. recovery" by Peter Eavis says the stock market, continuing a remarkable ascent that began in he darkness of the last recession surged past a milestone Thursday after a strong jobs report indicated that the economy might finally be gaining steam.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B5 of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.69 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.60  (last year it was 16.38).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.26 up from Thursday's P/E estimate of 15.05 (year ago it was 13.42) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.14 down  from  Thursday's dividend yield of 2.17 (last year it was 2.47). The Dow's all-time high was 17068.26 on July 3,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2657.80 up 14.33  from  Wednesday's   numerator of 2643.47.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.60 up 59 cents from Wednesday's  average closing price of $88.01.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.70  (HD/UNH)  up 47 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $82.23 (HD/UNH. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume was Travelers.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,433  ($265,780 - $264,347).

7/3/14 Thursday 1:18    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahumudova  & Carla Mozee says The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at record levels in a holiday-shortened week, fueled by a jobs report that was far stronger than expected but nonetheless isn’t shifting expectations about when the Federal Reserve will start raising interest rates.
Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq closed early at 1 p.m. Eastern Time for the July 4th holiday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.54%  closed 92.41 points, or 0.6%, higher at the preliminary 17,068.26 and gained 1.3% over the week. The S&P 500 SPX +0.55%   added 10.81 points, or 0.6%, to 1,985.343 and was 1.3% higher on the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.63%  added 28.19 points, or 0.6%, to 4,485.93 and finished the week with a 2% gain, its third weekly gain in a row.
Investors clearly welcomed a strong employment data, but decided the subdued wage growth means the Fed won’t speed up its timetable for ending its unusually loose monetary policy.
“While the slack in the labor market is tightening, wage growth is still contained. This means that companies are still able to keep their profit margins. And as the ISM numbers indicated, services-sector growth is slowing slightly. Markets would like to see economic growth without a jump in inflation and that is a hard balance to keep,” said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial .
The U.S. economy added 288,000 new jobs in June, and the unemployment rate fell to 6.1%. Meanwhile, weekly jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, ticked up 2,000 to 315,000 in the week ended June 28, hovering near a postrecession low for several months, the Labor Department said.
Among individual stocks, PetSmart Inc.PETM +0.30%   led gains on the S&P 500, jumping nearly 13% after revealing that hedge fund Jana Partners had acquired a 9.9% stake in the company. Movers and Shakers column has more on Thursday’s gainers and losers.
In other markets, Asian stocks finished mixed, with the Nikkei Average JP:NIK -0.14%  slipping 0.1%. The Stoxx Europe 600 XX:SXXP +0.93% rose as the European Central Bank held key interest rates unchanged, as expected.
U.S. benchmark oil futures CLQ4 -0.43%  fell 57 cents to $103.91 a barrel, and gold futures GCQ4 -0.78%  fell $9.20 to $1,321.8.
