http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,744 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's  Barron's & Investor's Business Daily; the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall Street Journal &  Financial Times; & Saturday's New York Times &  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 17100.18 UP 123.77 OR 0.73%  from Thursday's close of 16976.81. For the week the Dow is up 156.37 or 0.92%  from last Friday's close of 16943.81. For the year the Dow is up 3.16%. Of the Dow components 28  gained and 2 declined.   The biggest gainer   dollar-wise was Visa up $2.32  and percentage-wise was Johnson & Johnson up 1.42%. The biggest decliner   dollar-wise was IBM down 24 cents and percentage-wise down GE down 0.56%.

WSJ pB5 "Stocks turn up showing resilience" by Alexandra Scaggs, Saumya Vaishampayan says US stocks recovered Thurs to end the week higher as worries over the conflicts in E. Europe & the Mid east receded.

IBD pB8 "Nasdaq delivers best gain in two months; trade dips" by Paul Whitfield says stocks rumbled higher in lower vol Fri as the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

FT p11 Wall street" by Eric Platt says  US equity markets rebounded after volatility on Thurs tempered investor enthusiasm.

Sat NYT pB5 "Strong corporate earnings trump geopolitical worries" & Sat. AJC pA12 "Earnings spur rebound" by AP says US fin'l markets finished higher fri due to earnings from Google and other big firms.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6  of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.53 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.54  (last year it was 16.75).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.08 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.12 (year ago it was 13.55) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.17 down  from  Friday's dividend yield of 2.18 (last year it was 2.36). The Dow's all-time high was 17100.18 on July 18,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2662.77 up 19.21  from  Thursday's   numerator of 2643.56.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.76 up 64 cents from Thursday's  average closing price of $88.12.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $83.04  (PG/UNH)  up 33 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $82.71 (PG/DIS). The lowest volume was  Travelers   and the highest volume was GE.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,921  ($266,277 - $264,356).

7/18/14 Friday 4:06   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahumudova  & Carla Mozee  says The U.S. stock market finished the volatile week with modest gains, helped by a bounce on the main benchmarks Friday.
Broad-based gains on the S&P 500 were led by technology and healthcare sector stocks, particularly biotechnology companies.
Investors focused on earnings reports from companies such as Google, Inc and Huntington Bancshares and brushed aside implications of a Malaysia Airlines jet crash in Ukraine and Israel’s invasion of Gaza, which triggered a selloff on Thursday.

SPX 1,978.22, +20.10, +1.03%

S&P 500 gains modestly over the week.

F
The S&P 500 SPX +1.03%  rose 20.1 points, or 1%, to 1,978.22. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.73%  added 123.37 points, or 0.7%, to 17,100.18.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.57%  jumped 68.70 points, or 1.6%, to 4,432.15, as biotech and Internet stocks rallied sharply, after steep drops the day before. The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF rose 3%, while the Global X Social Media Index ETF rose 1.8%.
Equities on Thursday were rattled by news that 298 passengers were killed in a Malaysia Airlines MY:MAS -11.11%  crash in eastern Ukraine, where fighting between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian troops has been going on for months.
With the downing of MH17, Malaysia Airlines has lost two planes in five months. The WSJ’s Ramy Inocencio asks Vivian Lines, global vice chairman at Hill+Knowlton Strategies, if Malaysia Airlines can survive.
Meanwhile, Israel launched an open-ended ground invasion of Gaza aimed at crushing Hamas militants after 10 days of aerial bombardment.
“Geo-political headlines dampen consumer sentiment, but this market has been remarkably resilient,” said Terry Sandven, chief equity strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management. “Ultimately, this is an earnings-driven market and earnings so far have been encouraging, especially among large banks.”
Investors had a muted reaction to a weaker-than-expected consumer sentiment report. Separately, the Conference Board’s June leading-economic index rose in June, a sign that the economy could strengthen in the second half of the year.
Shares of General Electric GE -0.37% closed 0.6% lower after the industrial conglomerate’s second-quarter earnings met Wall Street’s projection. GE also said it’s targeting the IPO of its Synchrony Financial business for the end of July.
Huntington Bancshares Inc. HBAN -1.20%  climbed 4.8% after the regional bank’s second-quarter profit rose 9%.
Google GOOG -1.32%  shares rallied 3.7%, after the Internet company late Thursday posted second-quarter revenue that beat Wall Street’s expectation.
Shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. AMD -16.19% tumbled 16% after the chip maker’s second-quarter adjusted earnings missed analysts’ projections.
In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei Average JP:NIK -1.01%  fell 1% as investors sought the perceived safety of the Japanese yen. But the U.S. dollar USDJPY +0.20% eventually pared its losses against the yen. European stocks XX:SXXP -0.02%  slid on the geopolitical tensions, and Russia’s MICEX  dropped 1.3%.
In the commodities market, the safe-haven benefits for gold GCQ4 -0.43%  faded on Friday, with the precious metal dropping in electronic trading, as a lack of physical follow-through made that upward move unsustainable, according to analysts.
Crude-oil futures CLQ4 -0.16% settled marginally lower Friday.
