Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 7/3/14 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of 7/3/14.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Thursday at 17068.26 up 92.02 or 0.54   %   from Wednsday's close of 16976.24. Of the Dow components  27  gained and  3   declined.   The biggest gainer   dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Goldman Sachs up $2.57 or 1.54%. The biggest decliner   dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Johnson & Johnson down 44 cents or 0.42%.

As of the open of  the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.60 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.47  (last year it was 16.38).  Thursday's P/E estimate is 15.05 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 15.05 (year ago it was 13.42) and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.17 down  from  Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.18 (last year it was 2.47). The Dow's all-time high was 17068.26 on July 3,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,433  ($265,780 - $264,347).

7/3/14 Thursday 1:18    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahumudova  & Carla Mozee says The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at record levels in a holiday-shortened week, fueled by a jobs report that was far stronger than expected but nonetheless isn’t shifting expectations about when the Federal Reserve will start raising interest rates.
Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq closed early at 1 p.m. Eastern Time for the July 4th holiday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.54%  closed 92.41 points, or 0.6%, higher at the preliminary 17,068.26 and gained 1.3% over the week. The S&P 500 SPX +0.55%   added 10.81 points, or 0.6%, to 1,985.343 and was 1.3% higher on the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.63%  added 28.19 points, or 0.6%, to 4,485.93 and finished the week with a 2% gain, its third weekly gain in a row.
Investors clearly welcomed a strong employment data, but decided the subdued wage growth means the Fed won’t speed up its timetable for ending its unusually loose monetary policy.
“While the slack in the labor market is tightening, wage growth is still contained. This means that companies are still able to keep their profit margins. And as the ISM numbers indicated, services-sector growth is slowing slightly. Markets would like to see economic growth without a jump in inflation and that is a hard balance to keep,” said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial .
The U.S. economy added 288,000 new jobs in June, and the unemployment rate fell to 6.1%. Meanwhile, weekly jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, ticked up 2,000 to 315,000 in the week ended June 28, hovering near a postrecession low for several months, the Labor Department said.
Among individual stocks, PetSmart Inc.PETM +0.30%   led gains on the S&P 500, jumping nearly 13% after revealing that hedge fund Jana Partners had acquired a 9.9% stake in the company. Movers and Shakers column has more on Thursday’s gainers and losers.
In other markets, Asian stocks finished mixed, with the Nikkei Average JP:NIK -0.14%  slipping 0.1%. The Stoxx Europe 600 XX:SXXP +0.93% rose as the European Central Bank held key interest rates unchanged, as expected.
U.S. benchmark oil futures CLQ4 -0.43%  fell 57 cents to $103.91 a barrel, and gold futures GCQ4 -0.78%  fell $9.20 to $1,321.8.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Wednesday at 16976.24 up 20.17 or 0.12%   from Tuesday's close of 16956.07. For the year the Dow is up 2.41%. Of the Dow components 15   gained, Coke and Intel were unchanged and  13   declined.   The biggest gainer   dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was IBM up $2.04 or 1.09%. Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2643.47 up 3.14  from  Tuesday's   numerator of 2640.33.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $314  ($264,347 - $264,033).

7/2/14 Wednesday 4:07    pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis  & Carla Mozee says U.S. stocks mostly inched higher Wednesday, building slightly on the prior day’s sizeable advance, as a better-than-expected report on private-sector hiring underscored the economy’s recent strength.
The Dow industrials /DJIA +0.12%  rose 20.17 points, or 0.1%, to end at 16,976.24, putting it once again within striking distance of 17,000, while the S&P 500SPX +0.07%  nudged up 1.30 points, or 0.1%, to finish at 1,974.62. Each index scored a record close for the second straight day.
The Nasdaq COMP -0.02%  bucked Wednesday’s positive trend, falling 0.92 point, or less than 0.1%, to close at 4,457.73. The tech-heavy index snapped a three-session winning streak. Investors are awaiting Thursday’s monthly jobs report, and even a surprisingly strong private-sector jobs report couldn’t jolt the market to life. Thursday’s report is expected to show a net gain of 215,000 non-farm jobs and a steady 6.3% unemployment rate.
The ADP report, which showed 281,000 new private-sector jobs, has “not been a good indicator” for the jobs report, but still “the growth bulls will be pleased, and the “whisper numbers” for the jobs report will probably rise, said Steven Ricchiuto, chief economist at Mizuho Securities, in emailed comments.
In addition to Wednesday’s economic data, investors took in comments from Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen and IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, with at least one analyst seeing a “slightly dovish” tone . The S&P 500 rose to a session high as the full text of Yellen’s speech came out, but then quickly pared its gain.
Among individual stocks, Constellation Brands Inc. STZ +2.34% gained 2.3% after the distributor of Corona beer and Svedka vodka posted better-than-expected quarterly results. Meanwhile, Rackspace Hosting Inc. RAX +6.31%  jumped 6.7% following a report the cloud-services company is thinking of going private.
On the downside, GoPro Inc. GPRO -0.62%  slid 13.9% for its first daily loss since debuting last week.
In other markets, August oil /quotes/zigman/2196851/delayed CLQ4 -1.07% fell, while gold futures /quotes/zigman/11829489/delayed GCQ4 +0.03% edged up. Stocks in Asia finished higher, including a 0.3% rise of Japan’s Nikkei Average JP:NIK +0.29% , and the Stoxx Europe 600 XX:SXXP +0.23%  extended gains from Tuesday when it notched its strongest performance in two months.
