Post No. 2,749 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 17113.54 UP 61.81 OR 0.36% from Monday's close of 17051.73. Of the Dow components 20 gained and 10 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs up $3.30 and percentage-wise was Intel up 2.14%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Travelers down $3.63 or 3.81%.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.48 down from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.53 (last year it was 16.75). Tuesday's P/E estimate is 15.08 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 15.08 (year ago it was 13.55) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.16 down from Monday's dividend yield of 2.17 (last year it was 2.36). The Dow's all-time high was 17113.54 on July 2, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.83 up 32 cents from Monday's average closing price of $88.51. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $83.30 (HD/UNH) down 37 cents from Monday's median closing price of $82.67 (PG/UNH). The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume was Intel.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $962 ($266,485 - $265,523).
7/22/14 Tuesday 4:05 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahumudova & Sara Sjolin says The U.S. stock market closed modestly higher, boosted by better-than-expected inflation and housing reports as well as a flood of second-quarter earnings reports.
The S&P 500SPX +0.50% ended the session 9.93 points, or 0.5%, higher at 1,983.56, led by stellar results from Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. The benchmark index closed within a striking distance from its record closing level, reached on July 3.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.36% added 61.81 points, or 0.4%, to 17,113.54. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.71% gained 31.31 points, or 0.7%, to 4,456.02.
“Earnings so far are modestly above expectations, though revenues continue to be on a weak side,” said Jim Russell, senior equity strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management.
Russell expressed concerns about third and fourth quarter expectations, which he views as high, given modest revenue growth forecasts. In economic news, consumer prices gained again in June, but the rise was not as broad-based as in the prior month and was driven mainly by the rising cost of gasoline.
Inflation, as measured by CPI, has picked up noticeably in recent months, but Tuesday’s tame reading could ease some of those concerns. Rising for a third month, sales of existing homes grew in June to the highest annual rate since October. Six Dow Industrials components reported ahead of the market open. Coca-Cola KO -0.12% shares fell 2.9% after the beverage giant reported second-quarter sales that fell short of forecasts, while profit topped estimates. McDonald’s MCD -0.10% shares dropped 1.3% after the fast-food restaurant chain reported earnings that came in below expectations. Herbalife Ltd.HLF -1.06% jumped 23% -- the biggest one-day percentage gain -- after the supposed “death blow” that hedge-fund manager Bill Ackman intended to deliver against the company had the opposite effect. Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.CMG -0.13% shares rallied 12%, making it the biggest gainer on the S&P 500 index. The fast-casual restaurant chain lifted its full-year sales outlook late Monday as it reported profit and sales for the second quarter that were far better than Wall Street analysts had expected. Shares of Comcast Corp. CMCSA -0.06% rose 1.5% after the cable company said second-quarter profit rose 15%, in part as it reduced its rate of video-subscriber losses.
