Post No. 3,286 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of August 4, 2015 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of August 4, 2015.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 17615.17 up 241.79 or 1.39% from Friday's close of 17373.38. Of the 30 Dow components 1 gained and 29 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Apple up $4.17 and percentage-wise was Caterpillar up 3.71%. The only and therefore biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Coke down 9 cents or 0.22%.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14967727343149. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.63 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.68 (last year it was 15.58). Monday's P/E estimate is 15.66 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.96 (year ago it was 14.51) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.47 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.48 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14967727343149) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $5.08 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.89 up $1.21 from Friday's closing average of $86.68. The following are excerpts from Monday morning's Blog:
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 17373.38 down 46.37 or 0.27% from Thursday's close of 17419.75. For the week the Dow was down 317.08 or 1.79% from last Friday's close of 17690.46. For the year the Dow is down 2.52%. Of the 30 Dow components 8 gained and 22 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was American Express up $4.72 or 6.29%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down $1.65 and percentage-wise was Walmart down 2.12%.
IBD pB8 "Stock indexes tri early losses; American Express spurs reversal" by Paul Whitfield says stock indexes on Friday limped to their 4th loss in 5 sessions as Friday's action was down in lower volume while the current outlook is uptrend under pressure. American Express was down 1% on news the hedge fund ValueAct Capital bought a $1 bil stake in it.
Friday's closing Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2600.40 down 6.94 from Thursday's closing average numerator of 2607.34. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.68 down 23 cents from Thursday's closing average of $86.91. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $78.51 (CAT/AXP) up 73 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $77.78 (CAT/XOM). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $694 ($260,734 - $260,040).
8/7/15 Fri. 4:24 pm MarketWatch by Wallace Witkowski & Mark DeCambre say U.S. stocks closed lower Friday, with the Dow industrials hitting its worst losing streak since 2011’s debt-ceiling crisis, after the jobs report matched economists’ estimates, boosting the chances for a Federal Reserve interest-rate hike in September. The nonfarm-payrolls report showed that the U.S. gained 215,000 jobs in July, largely matching expectations, and the unemployment rate stayed pat at 5.3%.The solid employment data offers little reason to upend Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s plan to lift rates, possibly at the next two-day meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, which begins on Sept. 16.“The jobs report doesn’t increase the likelihood that the [Federal Reserve] will raise rates in September, but it also doesn’t decrease the likelihood,” Randy Frederick, managing director of Schwab Center for Financial Research, told MarketWatch. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.27% declined 46.37 points, or 0.3%, to 17,373.38, after having been down as many as 141 points earlier in the session. With seven straight days of losses, it marks the longest losing streak for the index since the height of the debt-ceiling drama in the summer of 2011.Back in late July/early August 2011, the Dow lost ground for eight sessions in a row, shaving some 857 points, or 6.7%, off the index. The current losing streak has shaved nearly 380 points off the index, for a loss of 2.1%. Another coincidence with August 2011: The Dow’s 50-day moving average is just 23 points away from passing below its 200-day moving average, or a so-called “death cross.” The last time the Dow’s 50-day moving average fell below its 200-day moving average was Aug. 24, 2011.The S&P 500 SPX, -0.29% finished down 5.99 points, or 0.3%, at 2,077.57, while the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.26% was off 12.90 points, or 0.3%, to 5,043.54.
Meanwhile, Cheniere Energy LNG, +5.62% was up 5.6% on news that activist investor Carl Icahn has acquired a more than 8% stake in the liquefied-natural-gas company. Graphics-chip maker Nvidia Corp. NVDA, +12.37% was leading the S&P 500 with a more than 12% gain after it posted quarterly results late Thursday. For the week, the S&P 500 is off by 1.3%, while the Dow is down 1.8% and the Nasdaq is off 1.7%.On Thursday, the three benchmarks finished with sizable losses, testing technical levels in a choppy session as media stocks suffered a big hit. What strategists are saying: The July jobs report “is one of two before the September FOMC meeting and every piece of data from here on out plays a large role in the central bank’s decision,” said Doug Coté and Karyn Cavanaugh, strategists at Voya Investment Management, in a note Thursday. FOMC refers to the Federal Open Market Committee, the Federal Reserve policy-making body that could hike interest rates at its September meeting.
