Post No. 3,282 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of August 4, 2015 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of August 4, 2015.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at  17373.38 down 46.37 or 0.27% from Thursday's close of 17419.75. For the week the Dow was down 317.08 or  1.79% from last Friday's close of 17690.46.  Of the 30   Dow components  8  gained  and 22 declined.  The  biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was American Express up $4.72 or 6.29%.  The  biggest decliner dollar-wise  was Goldman Sachs down $1.65 and percentage-wise was Walmart down 2.12%.

As of the open of  the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's  Wall St. Journal is 0.14967727343149.  Friday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.68 down  from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of  16.81 (last year it was 15.61).  Today's P/E estimate is 15.96 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 15.96 (year ago it was 14.62) and  today's dividend yield is  2.48 up  from yesterday's dividend yield of  2.20 (last year it was 2.22). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's closing Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2600.40 down 6.94 from Thursday's closing average numerator of 2607.34.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14967727343149) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $5.08  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.68 down 23 cents  from Thursday's closing average of $86.91.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $78.51 (CAT/AXP) up 73 cents  from  Thursday's median closing price of $77.78 (CAT/XOM).  The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Friday   morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $694  ($260,734 - $260,040).

8/7/15 Fri. 4:24 pm MarketWatch by  Wallace Witkowski & Mark DeCambre say
U.S. stocks closed lower Friday, with the Dow industrials hitting its worst losing streak since 2011’s debt-ceiling crisis, after the jobs report matched economists’ estimates, boosting the chances for a Federal Reserve interest-rate hike in September. The nonfarm-payrolls report showed that the U.S. gained 215,000 jobs in July, largely matching expectations, and the unemployment rate stayed pat at 5.3%.The solid employment data offers little reason to upend Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s plan to lift rates, possibly at the next two-day meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, which begins on Sept. 16.“The jobs report doesn’t increase the likelihood that the [Federal Reserve] will raise rates in September, but it also doesn’t decrease the likelihood,” Randy Frederick, managing director of Schwab Center for Financial Research, told MarketWatch.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.27%  declined 46.37 points, or 0.3%, to 17,373.38, after having been down as many as 141 points earlier in the session. With seven straight days of losses, it marks the longest losing streak for the index since the height of the debt-ceiling drama in the summer of 2011.Back in late July/early August 2011, the Dow lost ground for eight sessions in a row, shaving some 857 points, or 6.7%, off the index. The current losing streak has shaved nearly 380 points off the index, for a loss of 2.1%. Another coincidence with August 2011: The Dow’s 50-day moving average is just 23 points away from passing below its 200-day moving average, or a so-called “death cross.” The last time the Dow’s 50-day moving average fell below its 200-day moving average was Aug. 24, 2011.The S&P 500 SPX, -0.29% finished down 5.99 points, or 0.3%, at 2,077.57, while the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.26%  was off 12.90 points, or 0.3%, to 5,043.54.
Meanwhile, Cheniere Energy LNG, +5.62% was up 5.6% on news that activist investor Carl Icahn has acquired a more than 8% stake in the liquefied-natural-gas company. Graphics-chip maker Nvidia Corp. NVDA, +12.37% was leading the S&P 500 with a more than 12% gain after it posted quarterly results late Thursday. For the week, the S&P 500 is off by 1.3%, while the Dow is down 1.8% and the Nasdaq is off 1.7%.On Thursday, the three benchmarks finished with sizable losses, testing technical levels in a choppy session as media stocks suffered a big hit. What strategists are saying: The July jobs report “is one of two before the September FOMC meeting and every piece of data from here on out plays a large role in the central bank’s decision,” said Doug Coté and Karyn Cavanaugh, strategists at Voya Investment Management, in a note Thursday. FOMC refers to the Federal Open Market Committee, the Federal Reserve policy-making body that could hike interest rates at its September meeting.

8/6/15 Thurs. 4:44 pm MarketWatch by  Wallace Witkowski & Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks finished lower Thursday, testing technical levels in a volatile trading session as media stocks suffered a big hit and investors awaited the closely watched jobs report due Friday morning. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.69%  closed down 120.72 points, or 0.7%, at 17,419.75, for its sixth-straight day of losses, its longest losing streak since October. The Dow had been down as many as 178 points earlier in the session. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -1.62% took the brunt of the beating. The index fell 83.50 points, or 1.6%, to close at 5,056.44, after being off by as many as 105 points earlier. On Thursday, the index dropped below its 50-day moving average, a support level watched by technical traders, which suggests more pain may be ahead for the tech-heavy index.
The S&P 500 SPX, -0.78% dropped 16.28 points, or 0.8%, to 2,083.56, following a drop of about 24 points. Eight of the S&P 500’s main sectors closed lower, led by health care, down 2.1%; consumer discretionary, down 1.3%; and tech, down 1%. During the session, the index nearly dipped below its 200-day moving average of 2,072.56. Also, the Russell 2000 Index RUT, -1.29%  on Thursday dropped below its 200-day moving average for the second time in two weeks. The index closed down 1.3% at 1,215.85. Trading action was marked by steep declines in shares of media companies, including Viacom Inc. VIA, -13.35% which has seen its shares crushed lately, Time Warner TWX, -0.81%  and 21st Century Fox FOX, -6.74%  as these cable firms experience an exodus of pay-TV subscribers. Blue-chip component Walt Disney Co. DIS, -1.79% which was under pressure for a second trading session after reporting revenues that fell short of the market’s high expectations for the media and theme park giant, also weighed on the Dow.After a strong report Wednesday from the Institute for Supply Management showing nonmanufacturing job expansion at a 10-year high, investors are realizing that a Fed rate hike may very well come in September, said Brad McMillan, chief investment officer for Commonwealth Financial.“I think the ISM [report] really helps the odds for a September rate hike, and raises the chances of another one in December,” McMillan said in an interview.Stocks opened with small gains but the main indexes quickly swung into negative territory. “The market should really just be sitting tight ahead of the jobs report but I think you can account for some of the moves in the Dow from Disney,” said Randy Frederick, managing director at Schwab Center for Financial Research.Jobs data: Initial jobless claims edged up 3,000 to 270,000 in the week ended Aug. 1, the Labor Department said Thursday.
