Post No. 3,288 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of August 4, 2015 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of August 4, 2015.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at  17402.84 down 212.33 or 1.21% from Monday's close of 17615.17%. Of the 30   Dow components  3  gained  and 27 declined.  The  biggest gainer dollar-wise was  Walmart up 48 cents and percentage-wise was Verizon up 0.78%.  The  biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Apple down $6.23 or 5.2%.

As of the open of  the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's  Wall St. Journal is 0.14967727343149.  Tuesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.86 up  from Monday's   trailing P/E ratio of  16.63 (last year it was 15.72).  Today's P/E estimate is 15.66 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 15.66 (year ago it was 14.51) and  today's dividend yield is  2.42 down  from yesterday's dividend yield of  2.47 (last year it was 2.24). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's closing Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2604.81 down 31.78 from Monday's closing average numerator of 2636.59.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14967727343149) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $5.08  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.83 down  $1.06  from Monday's closing average of $87.89.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.19 (CAT/AXP) down $1.52  from  Monday's median closing price of $80.71 (CAT/AXP).  The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Tuesday   morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $3,178  ($263,659 - $260,481).

8/11/15 Tues. 5:08 pm MarketWatch by  Wallace Witkowski says stocks closed sharply lower Tuesday as the Dow fell more than 200 points in the wake of a surprise devaluation of the yuan by China—the world’s second-largest economy. China’s devaluation calls into question how the U.S. economy may fare as the Federal Reserve aims to start hiking interest rates for the first time since 2006 as signs of slowing growth abroad persists. Investors sold exporters and makers of luxury goods in the wake of the currency move. Also, shares of 20 companies with significant exposure to China, as identified by Goldman Sachs on Monday, were all trading lower Tuesday. On the other hand, investors scooped up shares of Google Inc. , sending them up more than 4%, signaling their approval of the tech giant’s new corporate structure built around a new umbrella company dubbed Alphabet Inc.The Dow Jones Industrial Average  tumbled 212.33 points, or 1.2%, to close at 17,402.84, with Apple Inc. posting the worst declines on the blue-chips index with a 5.2% tumble. The yuan devaluation means the iPhone maker’s gadgets will be more expensive in a key market. The S&P 500 declined 20.11 points, or 1%, to close at 2,084.07, led by losses in the materials sector, down 1.9%. The Nasdaq Composite Index  gave up 65.01 points, or 1.3%, to finish at 5,036.79.Tuesday’s descent in the Dow pushed it into what technical analysts consider bearish territory, when the 50-day moving average dips below the 200-day moving average, a so-called “death cross”, which the index hasn’t seen since late 2011. The downdraft in equities comes after U.S. stocks ended Monday firmly higher after Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer suggested a September interest-rate hike may not be a done deal.China’s yuan move: The People’s Bank of China early Tuesday in Asia devalued its tightly controlled currency, triggering the largest one-day loss for the yuan  in two decades. That put upward pressure on the dollar and ignited speculation the Fed may not raise interest rates in September.
