8/24/15 Mon. am Barron's Says AmEx Faces Tough Year

  http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/
by Dan Kolber

Post No. 3,309 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's  Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, Wall Street Journal,   Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at  16459.75 down 530.94 or 3.12% from Thursday's close of 16990.69. For the week the Dow was down 1017.65 or 5.82%  from last Friday's close of 17477.40. For the year the Dow is down 7.65%. Of the 30   Dow components   0 gained  and all 30 declined.   The  biggest decliner dollar-wise  was Goldman Sachs down $9.01 and percentage-wise was Apple down 6.12%.

IBD pB8 "Bears slam stock indexes hard; market correction is confirmed" by Paul Whitfield says Friday's action saw plunges in rising volume while the current outlook is market in correction.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's  Wall St. Journal is 0.14967727343149.  Monday's trailing P/E   ratio is 15.75 down  from Friday's   trailing P/E ratio of  16.26 (last year it was 16.15).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.57 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.73 (year ago it was 15.05) and  Monday's dividend yield is  2.59 up  from Friday's dividend yield of  2.54 (last year it was 2.19). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's closing Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2463.65 down 79.47 from Thursday's closing average numerator of 2543.12.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14967727343149) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $5.08  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.12 down $4.55 cents  from  Thursday's closing average of $84.77.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $75.38 (CAT/CVX) down $2.21  from  Thursday's median closing price of $77.59 (CAT/AXP).  The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Friday   morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $7,947  ($254,312 - $246,365).

8/21/15 Fri. 4:08 pm MarketWatch by  Tom Kilgore says the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -3.12% suffered its biggest weekly point drop since the worst week of the financial crisis. The Dow tumbled 531.14 points on Friday, and 1,017.85 points, or 5.8%, for the week, amid growing concerns of a slowing global economy. The Dow had tumbled 1,874.19, or 18%, the week ending Oct. 10, 2008, as the collapse of Lehman Bros. rattled global markets. On a percentage basis, this was the blue chip barometer's worst week since the week ending Sept. 23, 2011, when growing concerns of a double-dip recession in Europe pushed the index down 6.4% on the week.
