8/21/15 Fri. pm Dow Closes at 16459.75 down 530.94 or 3.12%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at  16459.75 down 530.94 or 3.12% from Thursday's close of 16990.69. For the week the Dow was down 1017.65 or 5.82%  from last Friday's close of 17477.40. Of the 30   Dow components   0 gained  and all 30 declined.   The  biggest decliner dollar-wise  was Goldman Sachs down $9.01 and percentage-wise was Apple down 6.12%.

 As of the open of  the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Friday's  Wall St. Journal is 0.14967727343149.  Friday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.26 down  from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of  16.60 (last year it was 16.09).  Today's P/E estimate is 15.73 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 15.73 (year ago it was 14.77) and  today's dividend yield is  2.54 up  from yesterday's dividend yield of  2.46 (last year it was 2.23). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's closing Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2463.65 down 79.47 from Thursday's closing average numerator of 2543.12.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14967727343149) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $5.08  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.12 down $4.55 cents  from  Thursday's closing average of $84.77.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $75.38 (CAT/CVX) down $2.21  from  Thursday's median closing price of $77.59 (CAT/AXP).  The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Friday   morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $7,947  ($254,312 - $246,365).

8/21/15 Fri. 4:08 pm MarketWatch by  Tom Kilgore says the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -3.12% suffered its biggest weekly point drop since the worst week of the financial crisis. The Dow tumbled 531.14 points on Friday, and 1,017.85 points, or 5.8%, for the week, amid growing concerns of a slowing global economy. The Dow had tumbled 1,874.19, or 18%, the week ending Oct. 10, 2008, as the collapse of Lehman Bros. rattled global markets. On a percentage basis, this was the blue chip barometer's worst week since the week ending Sept. 23, 2011, when growing concerns of a double-dip recession in Europe pushed the index down 6.4% on the week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at  16990.69 down 358.04 or 2.06% from Wednesday's close of 17348.73. For the year the Dow is down 4.67%. Of the 30   Dow components  none  gained  and all 30 declined.    The  biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Disney down $6.43 or 6.04%.

 WSJ pC1 "Highfliers hit hardest in stock rout" by Dan Strumpf says the Dow fell to its lowest level since Oct due to the continued slowdown in China and news that Fed Reserve officials are uncomfortable about the US economy as outlined in released July minutes.  Bernstien downgraded Disney. 

IBD pB3 "Stocks careen lower; volume cranks up pain" by Paul Whitfield says Thursday's action saw big losses in rising vol while the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

USAT p1B "Dow sees its biggest drop in four years" by Adam Shell says the drop was the worst since 11/9/11 as investors grappled with the timing of the Fed reserve's first interest rate hike.

AJC pA11 "Stocks tumble on sell-off" by AP says the market fell Thurs due to concerns about a dip in Chinese shares and heavy selling by tech traders.  It was the worst fall in 18 months.  Disney fell 6% as viewers are moving away from cable which could hurt ESPN.

8/20/15 Thurs. 4:15 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks saw a broad-based rout Thursday, led by a selloff in consumer discretionary, technology and energy stocks as investors wrestled with worries about a slowdown in global growth. The main indexes posted their biggest declines this year. The S&P 500 SPX, -2.11% lost 43.88 points, or 2.1%, to 2,035.73, falling below a 200-day moving average, a key technical level. The benchmark index also turned negative for the year, ending 1.1% below its close at the end of 2014. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -2.06% dropped 358.04 points, or 2.1%, to 16,990.69, its steepest percentage decline since Feb 3, 2014. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -2.82% ended the day down 141.56 points, or 2.8%, to 4,877.49, its steepest one-day decline since April 10, 2014.
