MarketWatch Monday 11/28/11 5:28 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks leapt Monday, posting their best day in at least a month, as Wall Street embraced moves by European leaders to join euro-area members in a fiscal union and on evidence U.S. holiday sales got off to a record start. “It seems European leaders are coalescing around a plan, and that plan is for greater integration of the European Union in terms of fiscal policy, and that would be good,” said Alan Skrainka, chief investment officer of Cornerstone Wealth Management. “It’s clear that Germany has been holding out for greater fiscal integration, a plan with real teeth. [Officials] weren’t going to provide a bailout with no strings attached. This crisis has provided them with the leverage they need to get this done,” said Skrainka. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +2.59% rallied 291.23 points, or 2.6%, to 11,523.01. It was the blue-chip index’s best day since Oct. 27 and marked a partial recovery from last week, when it sank 4.8%. All 30 of the Dow’s components gained, led by aluminium giant Alcoa Inc. AA -0.53% which rose 5.7%.
Rebounding after a seven-session losing streak, the S&P 500 Index SPX +2.92% rose 33.88 points, or 2.9%, to 1,192.55. All 10 of its industry sectors rose, led by energy and natural-resource companies. It was also the index’s best day since Oct. 27. The multiple support levels broken last week can now be viewed as resistance, with 1,206 to 1,216 the first target level on the S&P 500, and 1,250 the second, according to Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co.But Spar cautioned against jumping the gun. “Rome wasn’t build in a day but the Italian bond market can take it down in just a few sessions,” he said. Yields reflecting Spain’s and France’s borrowing costs fell on Monday, although the yield on Italy’s 10-year government note gained, remaining above 7%, a critical level that pushed Ireland, Portugal and Greece to receive rescue packages. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +3.52% climbed 85.83 points, or 3.5%, to 2,527.34, its best percentage gain since Aug. 23. For every stock falling, five gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 958 million shares traded hands. NYSE Composite volume topped 3.8 billion. The Wall Street Journal reported euro-zone leaders were discussing a fiscal pact among the currency bloc’s members that would make budget discipline legally binding and enforceable by European authorities. Reuters also reported European officials have reached an agreement on how to leverage the euro zone’s 440 billion euro ($586 billion) European Financial Stability Facility ahead of a Tuesday meeting of European finance ministers. The fund might insure the bonds of debt-torn nations with guarantees of as much as 30% of each issue. ‘I don’t think the market would be up 300 points on ‘people went to the mall this weekend’.
In the U.S., retail sales totaled $52.4 billion during the holiday weekend, with the average shopper spending $398.62, up from $365.34 for the year-earlier period, the National Retail Federation said Sunday, citing a survey by BIGresearch.
Monday’s stock surge was also the best performance for the S&P 500 and Dow industrials for a Monday following Thanksgiving in over 70 years, according to the Wall Street Journal’s data group. “More consumers than ever turned out for retailers’ Black Friday promotions, a promising sign for the economic recovery,” Matthew Shay, the NRF’s president and chief executive, said in a statement.
But Europe was the main driver, analysts said. “We got some good news in terms of Black Friday sales, but that is not nearly as critical to the outlook as Europe. I don’t think the market would be up 300 points on ‘people went to the mall this weekend’,” said Skrainka at Cornerstone. Wall Street maintained its upward momentum after the government reported sales of new single-family homes rose 1.3% in October to a yearly rate of 307,000. September sales were revised down to 303,000 from a first read of 313,000. Read more on homes sales. “I still believe this is a good thing as the market needs to further clear the size of existing home inventory,” Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak, noted in emailed commentary.
