Post No. 1,310 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of November 1, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's The Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, Investor's Business Daily, Int'l Herald Tribune & USA Today yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,170.18 up 101.79 or 0.84% from Monday's close of 12,068.39. Of the 30 Dow components 27 gained and 3 declined. For the year the Dow is up 5.1%. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was 3M MMM $81.83 +2.14 2.69% 4,159,810 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM $187.25 -0.07 0.04% 4,295,975 NYSE and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $27.84 -0.04 0.14% 17,171,923 NYSE.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks rise from ashes as Italy douses fire" by Brendan Conway says stocks advanced as the planned resignation of Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi was seen as a step toward resolving the nation's part in Europe's sovereign debt crisis.

Fin Times p22 "Fin'ls & resources help S&P keep its grip on positive territory" by Ajay Makan says shares in Wells Fargo rose after it said it had settled a long running legal dispute. JPMorgan the only bank other than Citigroup that may face a 2.5% capital surcharge was up 2.3%.

USA Today p4B "Italiam prime minister's offer to quit sends stocks up again" by Bloomberg says stocks rallied a second straight time as Berlusconi's offer to resign boosted optimism the nation will appoint a new leader who can tame the debt crisis.

NYT pB8 "Markets turn higher after Berlusconi offers to resign" by ChrisHauser says stocks gyrated Tues before ending higher on a day of significant political developments in Italy, the latest nation to come under fire in the drawn out euro zone debt crisis.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.09 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.98 (year ago it was 14.51); Wednesday's P/E estimate is 12.35 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.35 (year ago it was 13.46), and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.56 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.57 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,608.04 up 13.45 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,594.59. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.60 up 0.45 from Monday's average closing price of $53.15. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.45 (DD/VZ) up 0.28 from Monday's median closing price of 43.17. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $78.87 +0.53 0.68% 3,738,794 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $6.53 +0.08 1.24% 217,611,253 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,345 ($160,804 - $159,459).

MarketWatch Tuesday 11/8/11 5:01 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks overcame a choppy session to end decisively higher Tuesday on reports Silvio Berlusconi would resign as prime minister of Italy as the country works to reign in its debt.
Berlusconi offered to step down as soon as Italy’s Parliament approves austerity measures in a vote expected to occur next week. Italy’s surging borrowing costs have added to investor concerns about Europe, where the chance of a messy default in Greece recently sent shockwaves through markets. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi may be on his way out, clearing the way for a new administration to pass last year's budget deal. However, yields on 10-year Italian bonds are still rising and investor interest in euro-zone peripherals is still falling. “Europe is driving a lot of risk assessment in global markets,” said Stephen Wood, chief market strategist for Russell Investments. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 101.79 points, or 0.8%, to 12,170.18, with 28 of its 30 components on the advance. The S&P 500 Index gained 14.80 points, or 1.2%, to 1,275.92, with energy and materials stocks gaining the most among its 10 sectors. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 32.24 points, or 1.2%, to 2,727.49.For every stock falling, nearly three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 879 million shares exchanged hands.Stock indexes had meandered between gains and losses earlier in the day, after a vote by Italian lawmakers in which Berlusconi’s budget won parliamentary approval, but without a majority — leaving open the question of whether he’d stay in office. While there were never any expectations of a quick resolution to the European Union’s efforts to contain its debt trouble, the latest uncertainty had Wall Street focused on what normally would have been a routine vote in Italy to approve last year’s budget. The measure passed, but with too many abstaining for Berlusconi to claim a majority.“I think we are still in the risk-on, risk-off environment, by and large... We are [still] watching events in Europe, which has a political problem and needs a political solution,” said Wood.
