Post No. 1,309 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of November 1, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,068.39 up 101.79 or 0.84% from Monday's close of 12,068.39. Of the 30 Dow components 27 gained and 3 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was 3M MMM $81.83 +2.14 2.69% 4,159,810 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM $187.25 -0.07 0.04% 4,295,975 NYSE and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $27.84 -0.04 0.14% 17,171,923 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.98 up from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.89 (year ago it was 14.58); Tuesday's P/E estimate is 12.35 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.35 (year ago it was 13.46), and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.57 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.59 (last year it was 2.49). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,608.04 up 13.45 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,594.59. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.60 up 0.45 from Monday's average closing price of $53.15. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.45 (DD/VZ) up 0.28 from Monday's median closing price of 43.17. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $78.87 +0.53 0.68% 3,738,794 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $6.53 +0.08 1.24% 217,611,253 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,345 ($160,804 - $159,459).

MarketWatch Tuesday 11/8/11 5:01 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks overcame a choppy session to end decisively higher Tuesday on reports Silvio Berlusconi would resign as prime minister of Italy as the country works to reign in its debt.
Berlusconi offered to step down as soon as Italy’s Parliament approves austerity measures in a vote expected to occur next week. Italy’s surging borrowing costs have added to investor concerns about Europe, where the chance of a messy default in Greece recently sent shockwaves through markets. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi may be on his way out, clearing the way for a new administration to pass last year's budget deal. However, yields on 10-year Italian bonds are still rising and investor interest in euro-zone peripherals is still falling.
“Europe is driving a lot of risk assessment in global markets,” said Stephen Wood, chief market strategist for Russell Investments. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 101.79 points, or 0.8%, to 12,170.18, with 28 of its 30 components on the advance. The S&P 500 Index gained 14.80 points, or 1.2%, to 1,275.92, with energy and materials stocks gaining the most among its 10 sectors. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 32.24 points, or 1.2%, to 2,727.49.For every stock falling, nearly three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 879 million shares exchanged hands.Stock indexes had meandered between gains and losses earlier in the day, after a vote by Italian lawmakers in which Berlusconi’s budget won parliamentary approval, but without a majority — leaving open the question of whether he’d stay in office. While there were never any expectations of a quick resolution to the European Union’s efforts to contain its debt trouble, the latest uncertainty had Wall Street focused on what normally would have been a routine vote in Italy to approve last year’s budget. The measure passed, but with too many abstaining for Berlusconi to claim a majority.“I think we are still in the risk-on, risk-off environment, by and large... We are [still] watching events in Europe, which has a political problem and needs a political solution,” said Wood.

MarketWatch Monday 11/7/11 5:42 pm by Kate Gibson & Laura Mandaro says US stocks Monday ended near their highs of the session as Wall Street monitored events in Europe, where Greece’s latest rescue package was under discussion and Italy’s borrowing costs kept rising. “From confidence votes in Greece to threats of being kicked from the (European) Union .... drama remains as captivating as any of the reality shows on television,” noted Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners, in a note to clients. With trading at low volume, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 85.15 points, or 0.7%, at 12,068.39. That left the Dow 6 points away from the session’s highs, reached in the final minutes of trading. Italian bonds capitulated as the country's fractious political situation unnerved investors and Italian government bond yield curves started to look like the Greek, Irish, and Portuguese curves just before things turned nasty for them.
The S&P 500 Index gained 7.89 points, or 0.6%, to 1,261.12. All sectors rose, led by health-care and telecom stocks, as industrial and financial stocks brought up the rear. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 9.10 points, or 0.3%, to 2,695.25.
Advancers ran past decliners 16 to 13 on the New York Stock Exchange, where 783 million shares changed hands, or just 75% of the average over the last 30 days.
European finance ministers met in Brussels to work on the details of a strategy for bolstering the region’s bailout fund, while Greece’s political parties tried to mold together a new coalition government after Prime Minister George Papandreou on Sunday agreed to step down. Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said euro-zone finance ministers decided Greece will receive the sixth 8 billion-euro ($11 billion) tranche of its first bailout package and start working out the details of its new rescue deal after Greece’s national unity government provides a written statement of its intentions to adhere to a broad bailout plan agreed Oct. 26.For much of the session, the prospects that Italy would follow Greece to the cusp of default had rattled markets as Italian bond yields surged past 6.6%, to euro-era highs. The crucial rate for the 10-year Italian government bond is 7%, said Phil Barach, co-manager of the DoubleLine Total Return Bond Fund. If it gets above 7%, “the markets will perceive that the story for Italy will become like the story for Greece,” he said.“There has to be some change there and the problem is that unlike Greece, Italy is huge,” he said.Speculation that Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi would resign gave a lift to Italian stocks, though they pared gains after Berlusconi announced that he didn’t plan to leave. “With his support fading ahead of a key parliamentary vote [Tuesday], there is still a decent chance that Berlusconi will step down in the near future, but that would only be a first step in a long and painful process toward putting Italy on a firmer economic foundation,” said Kevin Giddis, a fixed-income strategist at Morgan Keegan & Co. Among movers, Amgen Inc.’s shares jumped 5.9% after the biotech-drug developer said it would repurchase up to $5 billion of its stock and Dish Network Corp. shares gained 5% after the satellite-television provider said it would pay a $2 a share dividend.
