The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,044.47 up 208.43 or 1.76% from Wednesday's close of 11,836.04. Of the 30 Dow components all 30 gained and 0 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was $187.34 +3.42 1.86% 4,362,696 NYSE and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.78 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.58 (year ago it was 14.28); Thursday's P/E estimate is 12.59 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 12.59 (year ago it was 13.15), and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.62 down up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.52 (last year it was 2.53). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,591.43 up 27.54 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,563.89. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.05 up 0.92 from Wednesday's average closing price of $52.13. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.14 (DD/VZ) up 0.82 from Wednesday's median closing price of 42.32. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $2,754 ($159,143 - $154,036).

MarketWatch Thursday 11/3/11 4:35 pm by Kate Gibson & V.Phani Kumar says US stocks posted a second day of strong gains in volatile trade Thursday, with all three major indexes back in the black for 2011, after Greece dropped voting on its financial rescue and the European Central Bank unexpectedly lowered interest rates. “The cutting of interest rates in Europe certainly helped,” according to Paul Nolte, managing director of Dearborn Partners.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 208.43 points, or 1.8%, to 12,044.47, with all 30 of its components rising and the blue-chip index up 4% for 2011. The S&P 500 Index gained 23.24 points, or 1.9%, to 1,261.14, with energy the best performing of its 10 industry groups and the index up 0.3% for 2011. Notable gainers included Qualcomm Inc. , up 7.5%, after the maker of mobile-phone chips projected sales that topped expectations. Also returning to positive turf for the year, up 1.7% since the end of 2010, the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 57.99 points, or 2.2%, to 2,697.97. For every stock that fell nearly four gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 962 million shares traded. Composite volume neared 4.6 billion. The session began on an upbeat note after the ECB surprised markets with a quarter-percentage point cut to its key lending rate to 1.25% amid deteriorating economic data from the euro region. In a press conference, new ECB President Mario Draghi suggested the euro area could relapse into a mild recession by the end of the year. Ahead of Thursday’s Group of 20 summit in France, German and French leaders held emergency talks Wednesday at which they opted to hold off on supplying Greece with further financial aid until the debt-riddled country decides whether it wants in or out of the euro zone. The hard line splintered the government of Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, with his finance minister on Thursday telling party members in Athens that Greece would not be holding a referendum that would amount to whether the country wished to retain its membership in the euro area. Papandreou reportedly indicated he would not call a vote on Greece’s membership, saying he would instead talk to opposition leaders about forming a transitional government. Jefferies Group Inc. shares lost 2.1%, coming back from a double-digit drop that triggered stock-market circuit breakers. The company said it had “no meaningful net exposure” to European sovereign debt. ”When that news hit that’s when market dropped off [its] highs, but we’re still seeing financials on the other side getting hurt,” Nolte said. Largely ignored was U.S. economic data, which had new applications for jobless benefits dropping back below 400,000.
A separate report from the labor Department found U.S. productivity climbing in the third quarter for the first time in 2011, rising 3.1% as companies looked to get more from workers without increasing costs.
The Institute for Supply Management’s gauge of services-sector activity slid to 52.9% in October from 53% in September, illustrating ongoing expansion. “Markets are not moving on economic data, it’s all based on sovereign debt. It’s very frustrating,” said Nolte at Dearborn Partners.
