Post No. 1,307 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of November 1, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,068.39 up 85.15 or 0.71% from Friday's close of 11,983.24. Of the 30 Dow components 24 gained, GE was unchanged and 5 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron CVX $107.72 +1.29 1.21% 7,822,092 NYSE and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $27.88 +0.91 3.37% 17,891,128 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $95 -0.74 0.77% 7,287,388 NYSE and percentage-wise was Alcoa AA $10.75 -0.18 1.65% 33,683,932 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.89 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.95 (year ago it was 14.63); Monday's P/E estimate is 12.35 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.59 (year ago it was 13.46), and Monday's dividend yield is 2.59 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.58 (last year it was 2.47). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,594.59 up 3.16 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,591.43. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.15 up 0.37 from Friday's average closing price of $52.78. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.17 (DD/VZ) up 0.23 from Friday's median closing price of 42.94. If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $316 ($159,459 - $158,340).

MarketWatch Monday 11/7/11 5:42 pm by Kate Gibson & Laura Mandaro says US stocks Monday ended near their highs of the session as Wall Street monitored events in Europe, where Greece’s latest rescue package was under discussion and Italy’s borrowing costs kept rising. “From confidence votes in Greece to threats of being kicked from the (European) Union .... drama remains as captivating as any of the reality shows on television,” noted Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners, in a note to clients. With trading at low volume, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 85.15 points, or 0.7%, at 12,068.39. That left the Dow 6 points away from the session’s highs, reached in the final minutes of trading. Italian bonds capitulated as the country's fractious political situation unnerved investors and Italian government bond yield curves started to look like the Greek, Irish, and Portuguese curves just before things turned nasty for them.
The S&P 500 Index gained 7.89 points, or 0.6%, to 1,261.12. All sectors rose, led by health-care and telecom stocks, as industrial and financial stocks brought up the rear. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 9.10 points, or 0.3%, to 2,695.25.
Advancers ran past decliners 16 to 13 on the New York Stock Exchange, where 783 million shares changed hands, or just 75% of the average over the last 30 days.
European finance ministers met in Brussels to work on the details of a strategy for bolstering the region’s bailout fund, while Greece’s political parties tried to mold together a new coalition government after Prime Minister George Papandreou on Sunday agreed to step down. Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said euro-zone finance ministers decided Greece will receive the sixth 8 billion-euro ($11 billion) tranche of its first bailout package and start working out the details of its new rescue deal after Greece’s national unity government provides a written statement of its intentions to adhere to a broad bailout plan agreed Oct. 26.For much of the session, the prospects that Italy would follow Greece to the cusp of default had rattled markets as Italian bond yields surged past 6.6%, to euro-era highs. The crucial rate for the 10-year Italian government bond is 7%, said Phil Barach, co-manager of the DoubleLine Total Return Bond Fund /quotes/zigman/593786 DBLTX 0.00% . If it gets above 7%, “the markets will perceive that the story for Italy will become like the story for Greece,” he said.

“There has to be some change there and the problem is that unlike Greece, Italy is huge,” he said.Speculation that Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi would resign gave a lift to Italian stocks, though they pared gains after Berlusconi announced that he didn’t plan to leave. “With his support fading ahead of a key parliamentary vote [Tuesday], there is still a decent chance that Berlusconi will step down in the near future, but that would only be a first step in a long and painful process toward putting Italy on a firmer economic foundation,” said Kevin Giddis, a fixed-income strategist at Morgan Keegan & Co. Among movers, Amgen Inc.’s shares jumped 5.9% after the biotech-drug developer said it would repurchase up to $5 billion of its stock and Dish Network Corp. shares gained 5% after the satellite-television provider said it would pay a $2 a share dividend.

MarketWatch Friday 11/4/11 5:08 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks fell Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average posting its first down week in six, after an unexpected drop in the U.S. jobless rate proved a mere blip on the screen for investors focused on Europe. “This week equity trading reflects that investors are extremely confused, and they deserve to be. Until we get some clarity, the market is handicapped by it,” Michael Gibbs, managing director and director of equity strategy at Morgan Keegan, said of the ongoing uncertainty over European Union efforts to get a handle on its sovereign debt. “Regardless what happens, the EU bailout terms and austerity etc. will be accepted, but the problem centers on how quickly this takes place,” said Gibbs. This week, European leaders warned they would withhold aid to Greece until the country resolves its political differences, which could involve the opposition party forcing elections, a process that could take weeks. The Labor Department on Friday reported the jobless rate unexpectedly fell in October, to a six-month low of 9% from 9.1% in September. The report had payrolls rising by 80,000 last month, a bit less than expected, but gains for August and September were revised higher. “The jobs report if you net it out was a positive report, with the previous two months revised up dramatically, but everything is insignificant and is going to take a back seat until we get some clarity” from Europe, Gibbs said. After falling as much as 194 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended down 61.23 points, or 0.5%, to 11,983.24. Bank of America Corp. shares fell 6.1%, leading declines that included all but five of its 30 components. Volatility puts short sellers to testGreg Swenson, co-manager of the Grizzly Short Fund, discusses the challenges that volatile markets have presented for short-sellers lately. But his fund is sticking to its short position on the home-builder sector. For the week, the blue-chip index fell 2%, breaking a five-week string of gains. Retreating back into negative turf for 2011, the S&P 500 Index declined 7.92 points, or 0.6%, to 1,253.23, with finance companies falling the hardest among its 10 major sectors, all of which were in the red.
The S&P 500 lost 2.5% for the week, quitting four weeks of gains. It’s still up 17% from intraday lows reached Oct. 4. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 11.82 points, or 0.4%, to 2,686.15. Bucking the broad trend, Groupon Inc. rallied 31% in the online coupon seller’s first day of trading. Shares of Starbucks Corp. gained 6.7% after the coffee seller reported quarterly results that topped estimates. For every two stocks rising, about three fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 861 million shares traded. In Athens, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou’s government faces a vote of confidence following his call Monday for a referendum on a bailout for Greece. The vote proposal was rescinded Thursday. “What is concerning Wall Street the most is the uncertainty that this could keep dragging on a while,” Brad Sorensen, director of market and sector analysis at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, said of the ongoing drama playing out in Europe, where the Group of 20 nations were unable to reach agreement on the role of using the International Monetary Fund. The October jobs report “tells the same story as the past couple of months, that the economy is growing, but not robustly, and consumer spending is holding up despite relatively low confidence numbers,” said Sorensen. Financial institutions’ sovereign debt exposure has added to investor unease in recent weeks. Four days after MF Global Holdings filed for bankruptcy protection stemming from losing bets on European debt, Jon Corzine stepped down Friday from his role as chief executive officer.
