MarketWatch Wednesday 1/11/12 4:56 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks largely erased Wednesday losses, with the S&P 500 Index stalled at five-month highs, on the ongoing tug between Europe’s debt troubles and an improving U.S. economy.
“There is some optimism being built up around earnings season, which is keeping people interested, yet a little cautious at the same time,” said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners. “I am cautiously optimistic, but eventually some of these headlines out of Europe are going to dent the market,” he added. After falling as much as 63 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.10% finished off 13.02 points, or 0.1%, at 12,449.45.The S&P 500 SPX +0.03% erased a mild deficit to close up 0.4 point at 1,292.48, with materials rising the most and energy ranking as the largest laggard among its 10 industry sectors. That was its highest close since July 28.The S&P 500 is facing a little trouble breaking through the 1,290 to 1,295 level, said Pavlik, who pegged the next resistance at 1,330 or 1,350.Lennar Corp. LEN -0.95% offered some respite, with the home builder reporting a rise in revenue in the fourth quarter, with low home prices and interest rates spelling signs of stabilization in the housing market.Shares of Lennar rose 7.2% and other building-related stocks gained, with building-products maker Masco Corp. MAS +0.76% up 4.6%. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.31% added 8.26 points to 2,710.76.Advancers edged ahead of decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where 759 million shares traded. Composite volume neared 4 billion.
The proposed merger of the owner of the New York Stock Exchange with Germany's Deutsche Börse are headed toward collapse with European antitrust regulators expected to block the deal.Wall Street showed no perceptible reaction to the afternoon release of the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book, which found U.S. economic activity to be expanding at a modest to moderate pace. Given the Federal Open Market Committee meetings, the notes that accompany them, and the frequent public speeches by Fed members, “ultimately the compilation that is the Beige Book doesn’t lead to much of a surprise,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott.Wednesday’s data from Germany’s Federal Statistics Office found the nation’s economy probably contracted by 0.25% in the final quarter of 2011, a year that overall had Germany’s economy growing by a robust 3%.“We’re in a mild expansion and they are in a mild recession,” said Art Hogan, equity analyst at Lazard Capital Markets, of statistics on the Germany economy in the fourth quarter.
In commodities, crude-oil prices CL2G -1.24% slipped under $101 a barrel in New York, while gold futures GC2G +0.75% climbed to a four-week high of $1,648 before closing at $1,639.60 an ounce. Treasury prices rose, with yields of the benchmark 10-year note 10_YEAR +0.05% used in determining the rate on consumer loans at 1.9%. “The fact that interest rates are quite low are telling you you shouldn’t be too overly optimistic here as the bond market is generally correct and the equity market is generally wrong,” said Pavlik.

MarketWatch Tuesday 1/10/12 4:56 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Tuesday climbed along with the euro as a weaker U.S. currency helped drive up the price of oil, other dollar-denominated commodities and resource stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 Index closed at late July highs. “The main driver is a lower dollar. It still remains a euro-centric story, and the euro is rallying because things haven’t blown up over there, and now we’re unwinding that rush to safety that characterized the month of December,” said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners. After a 122-point jump earlier in the day, the Dow industrials DJIA +0.56% closed up 69.78 points, or 0.6%, at 12,462.47, its highest close since July 26. Bank of America Corp. BAC -0.30% led the gains that included 23 of its 30 components, rallying 5.7%. Dow component Alcoa Inc. AA -0.64% rose 0.2% a day after the aluminum producer reported a fourth-quarter loss but also projected growth in global demand for aluminum in 2012. Read the Tell blog on whether Alcoa results are a good bellwether for earnings season. “Alcoa’s earnings weren’t much to write home about,” added Nolte, who also questioned the wisdom of using the company’s bullish forecast as a gauge of what might be ahead, logic he likened to “using Iowa as a predictor for the presidential nominee — sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.” “There may be fewer negative surprises since expectations have been lowered,” said Ed Yardeni, chief investment strategist at Yardeni Research Inc. Investors might want to look at how corporations performed year over year, rather than whether they managed to beat reduced expectations, according to Nolte. “If I expected you to get an F and you get a D, it still stinks,” the analyst said. The S&P 500 SPX +0.89% gained 11.38 points, or 0.9%, to 1,292.08, with financials and natural-resource companies faring best among its 10 industry groups. Extending gains into a fourth session, the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.97% gained 25.94 points, or 1%, to 2,702.50. For every stock falling more than three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 840 million shares traded hands. The euro EURUSD -0.23% advanced against the dollar as comments from a ratings agency provided some relief over France’s rating. Oil and gold jumped in New York, with crude futures CL2G -0.52% rising 93 cents to close at $102.24 a barrel and gold futures GC2G +0.23% rising 1.5% to end at $1,631.50 an ounce.
Trade data from China’s government showed that nation’s import growth declining to a two-year low last month, raising expectations for monetary easing for the second-largest global economy. The data helped support oil futures, analysts said.
