The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,758.85 up 83.1 or 0.66% from Tuesday's close of 12,675.75. Of the 30 Dow components 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $108.97 +2.68 2.52% 10,241,753 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $28.32 -0.20 0.7% 12,572,535 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.68 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.72 (year ago it was 14.89); Wednesday's P/E estimate is 12.05 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.05 (year ago it was 12.59), and today's dividend yield is 2.53 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.52 (last year it was 2.40). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,685.82 up 10.98 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,674.84. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.19 up $0.36 from Tuesday's average closing price of $55.83. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.73 (AXP/HD) up $0.56 from Monday's median closing price of $47.17. McDonald's declined $2.20 as it said profit may be trimmed as the Europe and debt crisis sinks the region's currency. Mcdonald's gets 60% of its rev outside the US.
Fin Times p24 "Zions Bancorp suffers sharp slide as CDO exposure underlines risks" by Ajay Makan says an earnngs miss by Zions Bancorporation highlighted the risk to US banks from souring loan securities. McDonald's reported strong 4Q earnings with net income rising 11% from a year ago, but the shares sold off 2.2%. Verizon Comm fell 1.6% after reporting a net loss of $2.02 bil, hampered by pension costs & lower margins on smartphone sales.
