A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,397.38 up 179.82 or 1.47% from Friday's close of 12,217.56. For the year the Dow is up 1.47%. WSJ pC1 "Stocks off to a strong start" by E.S. Browning says the Dow closed at its highest since July as investors moved into banks and commodity producers following better than expected manufacturing data from Germany, China& the US and news o US construction spending gains in Nov. Bank of America, last year's biggest loser in the Dow was a big Dow gainer up 4.3%.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "'12 starts strong but leaders mixed" by Victor Reklaitis says stocks charged out of the gate fueled by better thane expected economic news as Tuesday's action was up sharply in higher trade and the current outlook is an confirmed uptrend.

USA Today p1B "Markets begin '12 with a liftoff" by Adam Shell says there is an old saying on Wall St "As Jan goes, so goes the year, so the stock market got off to a good start surging 1.6% on the first day of trading. As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.41 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.21 (year ago it was 14.91); Wednesday's P/E estimate is 12.49 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.49 (year ago it was 13.65), and today's dividend yield is 2.57 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.60 (last year it was 2.46). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,638.06 up 23.76 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,614.30. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.60 up $0.79 from Friday's average closing price of $53.81. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.33 (DD/HD) up $0.42 from Friday's median closing price of $43.91. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $83.49 +1.76 2.15% 3,332,014 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $5.8 +0.24 4.32% 238,549,140 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $2,376 ($163,806 - $161,430).

MarketWatch Tuesday 1/3/12 4:51 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Tuesday celebrated the start of a new trading year with gains of about 1.5% after a gauge of U.S. manufacturing hit a six-month high, adding to cheer that began with solid data from overseas. “It’s a new year, and you can make the case people came in with a level of enthusiasm or optimism that might be guiding investment decisions. Most importantly is the lack of any headlines related to the European situation that is allowing people to focus on the economic data, at least for today,” said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC. After rising as much as 262 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.47% ended up 179.82 points, or 1.5%, to 12,397.38. It was the Dow’s highest close since July 26. Alcoa Inc. AA +0.24% and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. JPM -0.14% led gains that included all but four of the Dow’s 30 components, rising 6.7% and 5.2%, respectively.
Bank of America Corp. BAC +4.32% — last year’s greatest loser among the blue chips — was among the top three gainers on the Dow, adding 4.3%. McDonald’s Corp. MCD +0.03% , the Dow’s best performer for 2011, fared the worst Tuesday, falling 1.5%. The S&P 500 Index SPX +1.55% advanced 19.46 points, or 1.6%, to 1,277.06, with natural-resource firms faring best among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +1.67% climbed 43.57 points, or 1.7%, to 2,648.72. For every stock that fell, more than three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 855 million shares traded. NYSE composite volume was 3.9 billion. The dollar DXY -0.68% slid against other major currencies and U.S. Treasury prices also fell, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note 10_YEAR +4.48% rising to 1.954%.
Crude futures CL2G +4.21% finished at $102.96 a barrel, up 4.2%, on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Casting an upbeat light on the economy, the Institute for Supply Management reported its manufacturing survey rose to 53.9 last month from 52.7 in November. Also, the Commerce Department reported construction spending climbed 1.2% in November, the third increase in four months. The U.S. economic indicators followed positive reports from overseas, with unemployment falling to a two-decade low last year in Germany and indexes for China’s services and manufacturing industries rising in December. Stock indexes held their gains after the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve’s December meeting, in which the central bank said it would begin updating the public four times a year, starting this month, on how long it intends to keep interest rates at current levels. On Friday, Wall Street finished an up-and-down year pretty much where it stood at the close of 2010, with the S&P 500 unchanged in 2011, the Dow industrials up 5.5% for the year and the Nasdaq off 1.8%. “The volatility of 2011 is not likely to abate in early 2012, and a good long-term buying opportunity could present itself toward midyear as debt problems frustrate investors,” wrote Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners, in a research note.
