As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.49 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.47 (year ago it was 14.88); today's P/E estimate is 11.92 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 11.92 (year ago it was 13.55), and Friday's dividend yield is 2.57 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.57 (last year it was 2.45). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,647.78 up 2.84 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,644.94. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $284 (164,778 - $164,494).
MarketWatch Thursday 1/12/12 4:13 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks finished with modest gains Thursday, with the S&P 500 Index SPX +0.23% extending its winning run into a fourth session, as investors opted for optimism on Europe's troubles. "The market is breathing really shallowly until it gets additional metrix, not only corporate results but guidance," he added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.17% rose 21.57 points, or 0.2%, to 12,471.02. The S&P 500 advanced 3.02 points, or 0.2%, to 1,295.50, while the Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.51% gained 13.94 points, or 0.5%, to 2,724.70.
