Post No. 1,406 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of January 1, 2012.

A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,418.42 up 21.04 or 0.17% from Tuesday's close of 12,397.38. For the year the Dow is up 1.64%. Of the 30 Dow components 18 gained and 12 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $94.85 +0.87 0.93% 7,276,274 NYSE and percentage-wise was Alcoa AA $9.45 +0.22 2.38% 41,134,886 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM $185.54 -0.76 0.41% 4,276,368 NYSE and percentage-wise was Verizon VZ $39.21 -0.52 1.31% 27,985,200 Dual Listed.

WSJ pC4 "Bue Chips hold on for slim gain" by Timi Kilgore says blue chips eked out a gain after rallying in the previous session as good results from auto makers helped offset eurozone liquidity concerns. Alcoa rose 22 cents, Microsoft gained 64 cents and Verizon shed 52 cents as it said it sold 4.2 mil iPhones in 4Q, a quarterly record. TiVo jumped 90 cents after AT&T agreed to pay it $215 mil to settle patent litigation.

Fin Times p22 "Retail investors heartened by the prospect of strong holiday results" by Ajay Makan says retail stocks rallied strongly as investors geared up for Thursday's holidays sales reporting with apparel chains and luxury names to the fore.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks mostly flat as some leaders stir" by Paul Whitfield says stocks wandered to a mixed finish Wed as volume remained below average for an 11th straight session as Wednesday's action was little change, mixed trade and the current outlook is in a confirmed uptrend.

USA Today p4B "Stocks recover from early pullback to close day flat" by Bloomberg says stocks ended flat Wed as improving sales at retailers & carmakers helped offset lower than forecast factory orders.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.43 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.41 (year ago it was 14.95); today's P/E estimate is 12.49 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.49 (year ago it was 13.65), and today's dividend yield is 2.58 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.57 (last year it was 2.46). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,640.84 up 2.78 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,638.06. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.69 up $0.09 from Tuesday's average closing price of $54.60. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.88 (DD/HD) up $0.55 from Tuesday's median closing price of $44.33. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $84.18 +0.69 0.83% 2,930,728 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $5.81 +0.01 0.17% 239,611,090 NYSE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $278 ($164,084 - $163,806).

MarketWatch Wednesday 1/4/12 4:14 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks closed slightly higher Wednesday, crawling out of losses as reports on retail and auto sales offset those underlining Europe's debt struggles. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.17% rose 21.04 points, or 0.2%, to 12,418.42, with 20 of 30 components ending higher. The S&P 500 SPX +0.02% gained 0.24 point, or 0.02%, to 1,277.30. Consumer discretionary shares led sector gainers. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.01% lagged, falling 0.4 point, or 0.01%, to 2,648.36.
