http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,642 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of Dow 30 components'  SEC filings in each case as of 4/17/14.

A  read of the print editions of  Friday's Wall St. Journal,    Financial Times,   Investor's  Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 16408.54 down 16.31 or 0.10%  from Wednesday's close of 16424.85.  For the year the Dow is down 1.01%.  Of the Dow components   19  gained and 11  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing up $1.90 and percentage-wise was GE up 1.72%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was IBM down $6.36 or 3.24%.

WSJ pC4 "Tech rout snaps Dow's winning streak" by Chris Dieterich says disappointing results from IBM dragged on the Dow.  Industrial stocks were among the S&P's best performers powered by GE which topped analysts earnings estimates.  Goldman Sachs gained 22 cents after its 1Q earnings and rev declined from a year ago but beat analyst forecasts. IBM and UnitedHealth are charted under bad news as UnitedHealth's earnings were hurt by gov cuts to Medicare advantage programs and new taxes and IBM reported a 21% drop in profit amid a sharp decline in hardware sales.

NYT pB7 "shares close mixed to end a strong week that was bolstered by earnings" by Reuters says the stock market ended a holiday day shortened week with mostly modest gains as GE and Morgan Stanely rallied after reporting strong fin'l results.

AJC pA13 "Nasdaq, S&P eke out gains" by AP says stocks closed mostly higher Thurs. as upbeat earnings news from several large US firms such as GE, Morgan Stanley and PepsiCo reported 1Q results.

As of the open    the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.15 unchanged from Thursday's opening  trailing P/E ratio of 16.15   (last year it was 16.12).  Friday's P/E estimate is 14.87 up from Thursday's opening estimate of 14.53   (year ago it was 13.15) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.19 up  from Thursday's opening dividend yield of 2.17   (last year it was 2.45). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2555.07 down 2.54  from  Wednesday's closing numerator of 2557.61.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.17 down 8 cents  from Wednesday's average closing price of $85.25.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $78.83   (WMT/DIS)  up 26 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $78.57 (DIS/UNH. The lowest volume was   Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $254  ($255,761 - $255,507).
