4/22/14 Tues pm Dow Closes at 16514.37 up 65.12 or 0.40%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 16514.37 up 65.12 or 0.40%   from Monday's close of 16449.25. Of the Dow components  19   gained and  11  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs up $2.66 and percentage-wise was  Home Depot up 2.19%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Exxon down 56 cents or 0.55%.



As of the open    the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.23 up from Monday's opening  trailing P/E ratio of 16.15   (last year it was 15.88).  Tuesday's P/E estimate is 14.87 unchanged from Monday's opening estimate of 14.87   (year ago it was 13.05) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.19 unchanged  from Monday's opening dividend yield of 2.19   (last year it was 2.45). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.



Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2571.55 up 10.14  from  Monday's closing numerator of 2561.41.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.72 up 34 cents  from Monday's average closing price of $85.38.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.56   (DIS/HD)  up $1.02 from Monday's median closing price of $78.54 (HD/DIS). The lowest volume was   3M and the highest volume was Intel.


If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,1014  ($257,155 - $256,141).

Investors welcomed better-than-expected results from Lockheed Martin Corp  LMT -2.97% , Harley-Davidson Corp HOG +6.41% and Comcast Corp. CMCSA +1.90% , while a flurry of deal news in the health-care sector added to positive sentiment. The S&P 500SPX +0.41% ended the day 7.66 points, or 0.4%, higher at 1,879.55, rising for 6 straight sessions. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.40% closed 65.12 points, or 0.4%, higher at 16,514.37. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.97% added 39.91 points, or 1%, to 4,161.46, recording the sixth consecutive session of gains.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 16449.25 up 40.71 or 0.25%  from Thursday's close of 16408.54.  For the year the Dow is down 0.77%. Of the Dow components 17    gained and   13 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $2.26   and percentage-wise was Pfizer up 2.02%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise Disney down 88 cents and percentage-wise were Disney and UnitedHealth down 1.1%.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2561.41 up 6.34  from  Thursday's closing numerator of 2555.07.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor.
