NYT pB10 "Wall Street notches slight gains for the month and the quarter" by Reuters says the stock market rose Mon after Yellen said she would not increase increase rates.

As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.19 down from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.89  (last year it was 15.96).  Tuesday's P/E estimate is 14.74 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 14.74   (year ago it was 12.95) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.16 down  from Monday's dividend yield of 2.43   (last year it was 2.44). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2562.72 up 20.96  from  Friday's closing numerator of 2541.76.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.42 up 69 cents  from Friday's average closing price of $84.73.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.33  (DIS/PG) up 85 cents   from Friday's median closing price of $79.48    (DIS/PG). The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $2,096  (256,272 - $254,176).

3/31/14 Mon. 4:47   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says tThe U.S. stock market closed higher on Monday, while quarterly performance for the main indexes was mixed. The benchmark S&P 500 showed resilience this quarter despite geopolitical uncertainties and the curtailing of monetary stimulus.
On Monday, investors welcomed news that the European Central Bank may start quantitative easing to address the threat of deflation in the euro-zone. Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s comments about the state of the economy and monetary policy propped up indexes further. In a speech to a Chicago community reinvestment conference on Monday, Yellen said that the recovery still feels like a recession to many Americans, which is why the central bank will keep its “extraordinary” support for the economy for “some time to come.”
The S&P 500 SPX +0.79%  ended the day 8.41 points, or 0.5%, higher at 1,872.34, and recorded a 0.7% gain for the month. The benchmark index extended its quarterly winning streak, gaining 1.3% over the past three months.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.83%  jumped 134.60 points, or 0.8%, to 16,457.66 and is 0.8% higher on the month. However, the blue-chip index lost 0.7% over the past quarter.

SPX 1,872.34, +14.72, +0.79%

Fifth consecutive quarterly gain for the benchmark index
“What is helping markets today is the news from Europe – it seems like the European Central Bank got an approval from the Bundesbank to initiate quantitative easing as they are at the threshold of slipping into deflation,” said Doug Cote, chief investment strategist at ING Investment Management.
“The U.S. is exporting QE across the pond even as it is ending it here. Hopes for monetary stimulus boosted stocks there and giving investors more confidence here,” Cote said.
In economic news, a gauge of Chicago-area businesses unexpectedly tumbled in March, hitting the lowest level since August, led by drops for new orders and employment, according to data released Monday.
However, markets shrugged off the report and looked ahead to manufacturing and employment data later this week.
The biggest data of the week will come on Friday, when the U.S. employment report for March is due. Economists are expecting a rebound in jobs growth after cold winter hindered hiring in the first two months of the year.
Cal-Maine Foods Inc. CALM -0.29%  shares jumped 9.2% after the company reported quarterly results. The food company said third-quarter sales and profit rose due to higher prices and continued growth in its specialty-egg business.
Micron Technology Inc. MU +7.99%  rallied 8% in the wake of a positive write-up from analysts at Stifel Nicolaus. Analyst Kevin Cassidy said in a note that he disagrees with the general bearish outlook on Micron shares and urged investors to build positions in the stock on weakness.
