http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,625 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Friday's Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times, Investor's Business, New York Times, USA Today,   Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 16572.55 down 0.45 or 0.0%  from Wednesday's close of 16573. For the year the Dow is down 0.02%. Of the Dow components  17   gained   and   13  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was UnitedHealth Group up 64 cents and percentage-wise was Intel up 2.01%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was Goldman Sachs down $1.18 and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 0.82%.

WSJ pC4 "US rally stalls, indexes drift downward" by Chris Dieterich says stocks fell to end a 4 day winning streak as investors digested mixed signals on the US economy & looked ahead to Friday's closely watched U.S. jobs report.

NYT pB10 "Market declines as reluctant investors await release of March  employment data" by Reuters says 2 of the 3 major stock market indexes dipped slightly Thurs. on the eve of the gov's report on March employment, although a drop in biotech shares dragged Nasdaq down 1%.

FT p21 "Wall Street" by Eric Platt says US equities struggled for direction, as separate reports showed a firming in the country's service sector and a rise in unemployment filings.

IBD pb2 "Stocks end win streak, but trade slips off pace" by Paul Whitfield says stocks were down in slower trade Thurs. as the current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

AJC pA11 "Stocks slip but still near high"  by AP says the stock market held close to its all time high Thurs. aid optimism that the economy is set to strengthen.  There was a survey that showed new orders increased.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.30 unchanged from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.30   (last year it was 15.92).  Friday's P/E estimate is 14.74 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 14.74   (year ago it was 12.95) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.18 up  from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.45   (last year it was 2.43). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2580.61 down 0.06  from  Wednesday's closing numerator of 2580.67.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.02 unchanged  from Wednesday's average closing price of $86.02.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.75   (HD/PG) down 29 cents   from Wednesday's median closing price of $80.04  (HD/PG). The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Intel.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $7  ($258,068 - $258,061).

4/3/14 Thur. 4:285   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market dipped in and out of negative territory and ended Thursday marginally lower, breaking a four-day winning streak.
The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average hit intraday record levels in early trading. However, gains petered out by afternoon, ahead of the March jobs report due on Friday.
Initial reaction to Thursday’s economic reports was muted. Weekly jobless claims rose by more than expected, the U.S. trade deficit gap widened by more than forecast and the ISM services index rose in line with estimates.
Across the Atlantic, European Central Bank President Mario Draghi told reporters the central bank had considered quantitative easing. The ECB left key policy unchanged, but mildly disappointed investors who were hoping for an announcement of quantitative easing measures.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.11%  ended the day 2.13 points, or 0.1%, lower at 1,888.74.
The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA -.00%  closed down less than a point at 16,572.55, failing to break its record high. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.91%  finished the day down 38.72 points, or 0.9%, at 4,237.74, weighed down by sharp selloffs in highflying stocks such as biotechs and Internet stocks.
Kim Caughey Forrest, senior equity analyst at Fort Pitt Capital, says that markets are taking a breather ahead of the important jobs report due on Friday.
“The ADP data this week and jobless claims were softer and investors are holding their breath before the official jobs numbers. We are finally at the point where data are no longer impacted by cold weather, so Friday’s jobs report will give investors a more accurate indication of where the economy is headed,” Forrest said.
The number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits in the last week of March rose to the highest level in a month, but initial claims continued to hover near the lowest level since the end of the last recession.
The U.S. trade deficit with other nations rose in February to a five-month high, mainly because of lower exports such as Boeing aircraft and domestically produced petroleum.
Growth picked up last month for the U.S. service sector and other nonmanufacturing companies, according to data released Thursday.
