Post No. 2,623 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 16573 up 40.39 or 0.24% from Tuesday's close of 16532.61. For the year the Dow is down 0.02%. Of the Dow components 18 gained and 12 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar up $2.82 or 2.83 %. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down 95 cents and percentage-wise was American express down 0.84%.
WSJ pC4 "S&P extends climb into record territory" by Alexandra Scaggs says the Dow finished just short of a record high as stocks rose on reports on good unemployment and increased factory orders.
NYT pB6 "Market rises a 4th day on good job news" by AP says the stock market rose Wed for a 4th straight day after a report on hiring provided encouraging signs the economy is recovering.
IBD pB2 "Leaders, transport stocks thrive as market advances" by David Saito-Chung says stocks behaved decently Wed as Wednesday's action saw small gains in mixed trade as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.
FT p1 "Stock markets hit post crisis highs as IMF warns on growth" by Chris Giles, Michael MacKenzie says investors pushed global stock markets to post crisis highs.
As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.30 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.26 (last year it was 16.07). Thursday's P/E estimate is 14.74 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 14.74 (year ago it was 12.95) and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.15 unchanged from Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.45 (last year it was 2.43). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2580.67 up 6.28 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 2574.39. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.02 up 21 cents from Tuesday's average closing price of $85.81. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.04 (HD/PG) up 19 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $79.86 (HD/PG). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $628 ($258,068 -$257,439).
4/2/14 Wed. 4:35 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the S&P 500 indexSPX +0.29% ended the day at a session high, up 5.38 points, or 0.3%, to 1,890.90, closing at a record for the eight time this year. Consumer discretionary and industrials sector stocks led the gains.
The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA +0.24% closed up 40.39 points, or 0.2%, at 16,573.00, only a few points shy of its record close reached Dec 31. 2014. The blue-chip index is now flat for the year.
The Nasdaq Composite /quotes/zigman/12633936/realtime COMP +0.20% finished the day up 8.42 points, or 0.2%, at 4,276.46.
“Today’s ADP numbers should be taken not in isolation but as a part March data package—together with the ISM and jobless claims figures, they indicate a nice progression growing at moderate rate,” said Jim Russell, senior equity strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management.
“It appears that cold winter weather and not something fundamental held back the growth and resulted in weakness,” Russell added.
Private-sector-employment gains picked up in March, with employers adding the most jobs in three months, and quicker hiring may be ahead, Automatic Data Processing Inc. reported Wednesday.
ADP said private-sector employers added 191,000 jobs last month, up from 178,000 in February. A prior estimate pegged February’s increase at 139,000. ADP is not always a reliable indicator, according to Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.
“We no longer view ADP as a useful advance indicator of the official payroll numbers. Since ADP was revamped in October 2012 it has clearly tended to lag movements in the official numbers by a month. We still look for 250,000 jobs gain on Friday,” wrote Shepherdson in an emailed comments.
Separately, orders for goods produced in U.S. factories rose 1.6% in February, the U.S. Commerce Department said Wednesday. Orders for durable goods--products meant to last at least three years--rose 2.2% in February. Orders for nondurable goods increased 1%.
Two Federal Reserve officials speaking publicly on Wednesday offered slightly different views about the timing of the first rate hike. In an interview on Bloomberg Radio on Wednesday, St. Louis Fed President James Bullard said that he expects the first rate hike to come in the first quarter of 2015, though he conceded that he’s ahead of most of his colleagues.
Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart said that the first rate hike is not likely to be warranted until at least the last half of next year.
