4/17/14 Thurs. am American Express's Profits Up; IBM Earnings Lower

Post No. 2,640 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal,    Financial Times,   Investor's  Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 16424.85 up 162.29 or 1.0%  from Tuesday's close of 16252.56. For the year the Dow is down  0.9%.   Of the Dow components  25   gained, McDonald's was unchanged and 4  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Visa up 45.31 or 2.6%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth down $1.32 or 1.66%.

WSJ pC4 "Dow industrials cap biggest 3 day gain of the year" by Alexandra Scaggs says  US stocks rallied Wed bringing the S&P into positive territory for the year.

NYT pB6 "Market up 3rd straight day, as Fed commits to low rates" by Reuters says the stock market rose as the Red's chair, Janet L. Yellen, reaffirmed that the central bank would keep interest rates low.

FT p21 "wall street" by Eric Platt says US equity markets trended higher after 2 choppy days of trading buoyed by better than expected ind'l production figures.

AJC pA11 "Winning week continues" by AP says stocks closed higher for the 3rd day in a row on Wed due  to a crop of solid company earnings & encouraging economic news from China and the US.

IBD pB2 "In limp rebound, indexes rise broadly, trade thins" by David Saito-Chung says stocks enjoyed broad based gains wed but the number of both impressive breakouts & new highs was underwhelming as the action saw broad gains, thinner trade and the current outlook is market in correction.

As of the open    the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.15 up from Wednesday's opening  trailing P/E ratio of 15.99   (last year it was 16.21).  Thursday's P/E estimate is 14.53 unchanged from Wednesday's opening estimate of 14.53   (year ago it was 13.15) and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.17 down  from Wednesday's opening dividend yield of 2.19   (last year it was 2.44). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2557.61 up 25.27  from  Tuesday's closing numerator of 2532.34.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.25 up 84 cents  from Tuesday's average closing price of $84.41.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $78.57   (DIS/UNH)  down 2 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $78.59 (DIS/UNH. The lowest volume was   Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $2,527  ($255,761 - $253,234).

4/16/14 Wed. 4:33   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks rallied Wednesday, and three days of gains sent the benchmark S&P 500 into positive territory for the year.
Markets got a boost from better-than-expected economic growth data in China and an upbeat industrial production report in the U.S., while positive earnings from Yahoo! Inc. YHOO -1.02%   and Intel Corp. INTC -0.33%  lifted tech stocks.
The S&P 500 SPX +1.05%  ended the day 19.33 points, or 1.1%, higher at 1,862.31. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.00%  jumped 162.29 points, or 1%, to 16,424.85.
The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP +1.29%  added 52.06 points, or 1.3%, to 4,086.23, recouping some of the heavy losses from last week.
COMP 4,086.23, +52.06, +1.29%
The Nasdaq Composite came close to correction territory

Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen in a speech and a Q&A session reiterated that the decision on interest rates would be based on employment and inflation, further boosting sentiment. The Fed’s summary of economic conditions, known as the Beige Book, said the U.S. economy picked up in most of the country as the weather improved.
In economic news, data released by the Federal Reserve on Wednesday show industrial production grew more than forecast in March, thanks to mining and utility output.
Data on housing was not as upbeat. The U.S. Commerce Department’s report on housing starts in March came in below expectations even though construction on new U.S. homes in March hit its fastest pace in three months.
Kim Caughey Forrest, senior equity analyst at Fort Pitt Capital, said markets reacted to the better-than-expected headline number on the industrial production report, but warned the numbers are still not great.
“It is still a flat economy and improving slowly. Housing starts data were weak and at this point, still difficult to say if it’s weather related or that we hit a soft patch in the housing market,” Forrest said.
In earnings news, Yahoo Inc.YHOO -1.02%  jumped 6.3%, its best day in nine months, after quarterly earnings released late Tuesday beat estimates. The Internet company’s first-quarter adjusted earnings were 38 cents a share.
Bank of America Corp. /BAC -0.25%  reported a first-quarter loss of 5 cents a share, sending shares 1.6% lower. The bank recorded $6 billion in litigation expenses during the period.
Post Holdings Inc.POST +5.66%  shares rallied 5.7% following a report in The Wall Street Journal that it has beat out several other competitors, including Tyson Foods Inc.TSN +0.73% , to position itself to buy Michael Foods Group for about $2.5 billion.
Interactive Brokers Group Inc. IBKR +11.69%  shares jumped 12% after the firm said its profit surged, due largely to increased trading activity in its electronic brokerage unit.
St. Jude Medical Inc.STJ -1.87%  shares dropped 1.9% after the company said it earned an adjusted 96 cents a share in the first quarter, almost in line with FactSet estimates of 95 cents.
After the closing bell, several companies reported disappointing results.
Google Inc. shares slid, erasing all of Wednesday’s gains. The internet group missed Wall Street’s earnings expectations for the first-quarter results. Class A shares in the company closed up 2.8% to $563.90. Both Class A shares GOOGL -4.19% and Class C shares GOOG -4.05%   fell more than 5% in after-hours trade.
IBM Corp.IBM -4.18% shares sid 3.8% after the company’s revenue fell short of Wall Street expectations.
Shares in American Express CoAXP -0.69%   fell 1.5% as revenue disappointed investors.
In overseas markets, Asian and European stocks closed higher. Gold and oil prices ticked up.
