Post No. 3,010 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.
A  read of the print editions of  Friday's Wall Street Journal, Investor's Business Daily, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 17320.71 down 106.38 or 0.61%  from Wednesday's close of 17427.09.   For the year the Dow is down 2.8%. Of the Dow components 6  gained, United Technologies was unchanged   and 23 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Walmart up 77 cents and percentage-wise was  UnitedHealthcare up 1.09%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was Visa down $2.43  and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down 2.03%.

WSJ pC4 "Worries on earnings, economies hit stocks" by Alexandra Scaggs says US stocks had their 5th straight sessions of declines due to disappointing earnings & worries about economic growth.  JPMorgan fell 3.2% after a wed loss when it reported disappointing earnings.

NYT pB7 "Weak bank earnings help push shares to a 5th straight drop" by AP says disappointing results from Bank of America & Citigroup caused a drop in the market as oil prices cont'd their slide & gov bonds jumped.

IBD pB3 "Stocks retreat as market repeats choppy pattern" by Paul Whitfield says Thursday's action was down in lower vol &current outlook was uptrend under pressure.

As of the open of  the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Friday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.00 down  from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.09  (last year it was 17.08).  Today's P/E estimate is 15.05 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 15.05 (year ago it was 14.82) and today's dividend yield is 2.51 up from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.42  (last year it was 2.09). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2697.11 down 16.57  from  Wednesday's   numerator of 2713.68.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.90 down 56 cents from Wednesday's  average closing price of $90.46.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.40  (XOM/PG) down 75 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $90.15 (XOM/PG). The lowest volume was  Intel and the highest volume was GE.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $1,657  ($271,368 - $269,711).

1/15/15 Thurs. 4:49 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says
the U.S. stock market finished Thursday’s volatile session lower, extending the losing streak to five straight sessions after the Swiss National Bank stunned global markets by cutting its currency cap with the euro. The main benchmarks struggled to hold on to opening gains, as a shock move by the SNB to lift its currency ceiling, disappointing earnings results from large banks, as well as a mixed bag of economic releases also sapped confidence. The unexpected move to ditch its currency ceiling and implement a rate cut by SNB shook up currency, commodity and equity markets around the world, as the move created uncertainty among investors, who have grown accustomed to rely on central banks to prop up markets.Traders observed that ‘once-in-a-career’ turbulence left many market participants in the throes of panic for the first two hours after the announcement. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.92% which opened higher, closed down 18.57 points, or 0.9%, at 1,992.70.
Defensive sectors, such as utilities ended higher, while technology, financials and energy sector stocks sold off. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.61%  ended 106.38 points, or 0.6%, lower at 17,320.71. J.P. Morgan Chase & Co and Cysco Systems Inc. were the top decliners on the index. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.48%  dropped 68.50 points, or 1.5%, to 4,570.82, as its biggest component Apple Inc. dropped 2.7%.Scott Wren, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors, said that market reaction today indicates how worried investors are about global growth.
Wren down played recent volatility, noting that the S&P 500 is less than 5% down from its previous peak.“The majority of trading on Wall Street is done by short-term traders, which explains intraday volatility. If it were ‘buy-and-hold’ investors, dumping the stocks, we would see a much bigger selloff,” Wren added.Ashraf Laidi, chief global strategist at City Index Ltd, a UK-based forex broker, said that the Swiss action today signals a growing deflationary pressure globally.
