Post No. 3,016 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 17515.23 up 3.66 or 0.02%  from Friday's close of 17511.57. 1/20/15 Tues. 4:49 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Carla Mozee says U.S. stocks ended Tuesday’s choppy session with marginal gains, as technology stocks led advances. The main benchmarks turned big early losses into gains, only to end roughly where they started the session.
Intraday volatility reflects uncertainty about the monetary policy in Europe, with investors appearing skeptical about the ability of central banks to combat deflationary forces. The European Central Bank is widely expected to announce a government-bond-buying program on Thursday; however, the program’s scope may disappoint investors, analysts have warned. U.S. markets were closed on Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.15%  closed 3.13 points, or 0.2%, higher at 2,022.55, with technology stocks in the lead. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.02%  ended with a marginal gain of 3.66 points to 17,515.23. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.44%  outperformed other indexes, adding 20.46 points, or 0.4%, to 4,654.85. Apple Inc, AAPL, +2.58%  the largest component on the index accounted for a big portion of the gains, as the stock rose 2.6%.Ten-year Treasurys TMUBMUSD10Y, +0.00%  rallied but trimmed initial gains. The yield declined by 1.2 basis points to 1.803% at the close. The yield on the benchmark debt has steadily declined over the past 12 months.“The big elephant in the room is deflation, and many portfolio managers are beginning to adjust their models to work in a low-interest-rate environment,” said Marty Leclerc, chief investment officer of Barrack Yard Advisors. “That adjustment period spells volatility.”Leclerc stressed that in the short term the environment will be favorable for stocks, as investors may justify higher price-to-earnings ratios when real interest rates are at zero.Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, said the day’s action is all about the fear of a global economic slowdown. “We are in the midst of earnings, and markets are not reacting to positive results, and the culprit is concern about Asia and Europe,” he said. “The bond market is afraid of deflation, which is why we are seeing such low yields on long-dated Treasurys.”In economic news, a gauge of confidence among home builders ticked down this month by one point to 57, staying close to the highest level since late 2005, according to National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo data released Tuesday morning. Readings above 50 signal that builders, generally, are optimistic about sales trends.

1/16/15 Fri. 4:49 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks ended the roller-coaster week on a high note, as a rally in oil prices and calmer currency markets provided a rare boost of confidence. The main benchmarks broke a five-day losing streak, but still ended the fourth-straight week with losses. Markets were rocked by the Swiss National Bank’s move to lift its currency ceiling on Thursday, while volatile crude-oil prices and fears of global deflation put pressure on equities this week. S&P 500 SPX, +1.34%  closed up 26.75 points, or 1.3%, at 2,019.42, but was down 1.2% over the week. A rally in oil prices lifted energy sector stocks, rising 3.2%, but gains were across the board. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.10%  gained 190.86 points, or 1.1%, to 17,511.57, and lost 1.3% over the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +1.39%  ended the day with a gain of 63.56 points, or 1.4%, at 4,634.38, and recorded a 1.5% weekly loss. The stock market has been extremely volatile over the past two months, as a slide in oil prices as well as stagnant growth in Europe and Asia has stoked fears that the U.S. economy may not withstand global deflationary pressures.Ed Shill, chief investment officer at QCI Asset Management, said that the stock market is extremely overbought and recommends investors to have ‘airbags’ when the market drops significantly. “We believe that Wall Street’s estimates of 2015 earnings are overly optimistic, as such estimates imply that the U.S. will remain an island of stability while the rest of the world is in serious trouble,” Shill said.Speaking about Friday’s consumer inflation data, he said that the trend is likely to keep the Fed from raising rates at all this year.
“The Fed will be on a hard pause from policy changes - I doubt they will increase rates, but I also doubt that they will do another QE program as they are desperate to normalize rates,” he added.
“Given the oil higher today and not a lot of bad news, it’s not surprising to see stocks higher,” said Randy Frederick, managing director of trading & amp; derivatives at Schwab Center for Financial Research.
