Post No. 3,023 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Wednesday's , Wall Street Journal,  Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 17387.21 down 291.49 or 1.65%  from Monday's close of 17678.70. For the year the Dow is down 2.4%. Of the Dow components only United Technologies   gained   and   29 declined. The only and therefore biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was United Technologies up 41 cents or 0.35%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise   was Caterpillar down $6.18  and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 9.25%.

WSJ pC1 "stock price swings unsettle markets" by Saumya Vaishampayan says the Dow dropped due to disappointing rev and downbeat guidance from firms such as Microsoft and Caterpillar.

IBD pB5 "Distribution for Nasdaq; small caps hang tough" by Ken Shreve says poor earnings reports from Microsoft and Caterpillar caused sharp losses in mixed vol while the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

FT p19 "Wall street" by Mamta Badkar, Eric Platt   says the market declined on a string of earnings misses with Procter & gamble blaming a stronger dollar for lackluster results.

AJC pA11 "Stocks fall on lower earnings" by Alex Veiga, AP says stocks fell after some large firms reported  disappointing earnings including Microsoft, Caterpillar and Procter & Gamble.

As of the open of  the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Wednesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.42 down  from Tuesday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.66 (last year it was 15.55).  Wednesday's P/E estimate is 15.58 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 15.58 (year ago it was 14.75) and  Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.50 up from  Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.47  (last year it was 2.18). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2707.47 down 45.38  from  Monday's   numerator of 2752.85.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.25 down $1.51 from Monday's  average closing price of $91.76.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.56  (WMT/MCD) down $1.57 from Monday's median closing price of $90.13 (PG/MCD).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $4,538  ($275,285 - $270,747).

1/27/15 Tues. 4:28 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks recorded their biggest decline in three weeks on Tuesday, following a surprise drop in durable-goods orders and disappointing earnings from Microsoft Corp. and Caterpillar Inc.
The weak data stoked fears that economic growth is decelerating. The S&P 500 SPX, -1.34%  closed down 27.53 points, or 1.3%, at 2,029.56, as Microsoft Corp. MSFT, +0.42%  and Caterpillar Inc. CAT, -7.18%  plunged to lead losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -1.65%  dropped as much as 380 points, but closed down 291.49 points, or 1.7%, at 17,387.21. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.89%  ended the day with a loss of 90.27 points, or 1.9%, at 4,681.50, as its largest component, Apple Inc. AAPL, +4.99% slid 2.3%. Jonathan Golub, chief market strategist at RBC Capital Markets, said weakness in economic data and company earnings are behind the selloff.
“Markets are down nicely, but in larger contexts, they are off only 3-4% from their peaks. This does not alter our general view that markets will gain in 2015. U.S. stocks will benefit from capital flows from foreign investors, due to stronger dollar and relative strength of our economy,” Golub said.
Tuesday’s unexpected drop in orders for durable goods aren’t a worry because they support his projection that the economy will grow 2.5%, rather than the consensus call of 3%, he said.
“We believe the 2.5% growth is the new benchmark,” he added. Economists had expected a modest rise, but orders fell 3.4% in December, and November data were also revised downward. Analysts said the data will make the Federal Reserve's task of raising rates this year harder. Colin Cieszynski, chief market analyst at CMC Markets, said the negative effects of the plunge in commodities prices are showing up in economic data, but the benefits are lagging. “The slowdown pushes the Fed’s rate-hike schedule a bit further into the fall or even toward the end of the year. We expect to see some more layoffs due to cuts in capex in the energy sector. It will take some time before consumers realize that low gas prices are here to stay and open up their purses,” Cieszynski said. Separately, U.S. house prices edged back 0.2% in November, to lower the year-over-year advance to 4.3%, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller 20-city composite index released Tuesday. On a seasonally adjusted basis, home prices advanced 0.7%, the report said.
