Post No. 3,013 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Tuesday's Investor's Business Daily; the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall Street Journal & Financial Times; Sunday's & Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 17511.57 up 190.86 or 1.10% from Thursday's close of 17320.71. For the week the Dow is down 225.8 or 1.27% down from last Friday's close of 17737.37. For the year the Dow is down 1.7%. Of the Dow components 27 gained and 3 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Home Depot up $3.11 and percentage-wise was 2.43%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Goldman Sachs down $1.26 or 0.71%.
WSJ pB5 "Stocks snap a five-session losing streak" by Corrie Driebusch says Goldman Sachs 4Q net income fell 7.1% as its rev from trading and investment banking slid.
FT p14 "Wall street" says US stocks rallied Friday led by energy stocks and as US consumer confidence hit a 10 year high.
IBD pB8 "Indexs find support, but situation still murky" Paul Whitfield says Friday's action was up sharply in lower trade while the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.19 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.00 (last year it was 17.04). Tuesday's P/E estimate is 15.33 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.05 (year ago it was 14.82) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.51 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.42 (last year it was 2.08). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2726.83 up 29.72 from Thursday's numerator of 2697.11. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.89 up 99 cents from Thursday's average closing price of $89.90. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $91.19 (XOM/PG) up 79 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $89.40 (XOM/PG). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $2,972 ($272,683 - $269,711).
1/16/15 Fri. 4:49 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks ended the roller-coaster week on a high note, as a rally in oil prices and calmer currency markets provided a rare boost of confidence. The main benchmarks broke a five-day losing streak, but still ended the fourth-straight week with losses. Markets were rocked by the Swiss National Bank’s move to lift its currency ceiling on Thursday, while volatile crude-oil prices and fears of global deflation put pressure on equities this week. S&P 500 SPX, +1.34% closed up 26.75 points, or 1.3%, at 2,019.42, but was down 1.2% over the week. A rally in oil prices lifted energy sector stocks, rising 3.2%, but gains were across the board. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.10% gained 190.86 points, or 1.1%, to 17,511.57, and lost 1.3% over the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +1.39% ended the day with a gain of 63.56 points, or 1.4%, at 4,634.38, and recorded a 1.5% weekly loss. The stock market has been extremely volatile over the past two months, as a slide in oil prices as well as stagnant growth in Europe and Asia has stoked fears that the U.S. economy may not withstand global deflationary pressures.Ed Shill, chief investment officer at QCI Asset Management, said that the stock market is extremely overbought and recommends investors to have ‘airbags’ when the market drops significantly. “We believe that Wall Street’s estimates of 2015 earnings are overly optimistic, as such estimates imply that the U.S. will remain an island of stability while the rest of the world is in serious trouble,” Shill said.Speaking about Friday’s consumer inflation data, he said that the trend is likely to keep the Fed from raising rates at all this year.
“The Fed will be on a hard pause from policy changes - I doubt they will increase rates, but I also doubt that they will do another QE program as they are desperate to normalize rates,” he added.
“Given the oil higher today and not a lot of bad news, it’s not surprising to see stocks higher,” said Randy Frederick, managing director of trading & amp; derivatives at Schwab Center for Financial Research.
