Post No. 2,992 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Tuesday's  Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 17501.65 down 331.34 or 1.86%  from Friday's close of 17832.99. For the year the Dow is down 1.8%. Of the Dow components only Merck  gained, Coke was unchanged   and 28   declined. The only and therefore the  biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Merck up 85 cents or 1.49%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was Goldman Sachs down $6.07 and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down 5.28%.

WSJ pC1 "Dow off 300 in global rout" by Dan Strumpf says a downside of falling oil prices hit the shares of Caterpillar, Chevron and Exxon as a sharp drop in energy stocks dragged down the Dow to their biggest loss since early, Oct., as investors recognized the downside of falling oil prices.

As of the open of  the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.43 down  from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.74  (last year it was 16.92).  Today's P/E estimate is 15.71 up from Monday's P/E estimate of 15.61 (year ago it was 14.75) and today's dividend yield is 2.48 up from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.43  (last year it was 2.07). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2725.29 down 51.59  from  Friday's   numerator of 2776.88.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.84 down $1.72 from Friday's  average closing price of $92.56.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.43  (XOM/AXP) down $2.50 from Friday's median closing price of $92.93 (XOM/AXP). The lowest volume was   Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $5,159  ($277,688 - $272,529 ).

1/5/15 Mon. 4:08 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says a bout of selling on Wall Street Monday, triggered by a renewed plunge in crude oil prices and surging dollar, left the S&P 500 and the Dow industrials bruised. The S&P 500 SPX, -1.83% closed off session lows but still suffered its worst one-day decline in three months and recorded its longest losing streak in a year, falling for the fourth straight session. The benchmark index lost 37.62 points, or 1.8%, to 2,020.58. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -1.86% also had its worst down day in three months, with 28 of its 30 components closing with losses. The blue-chip index dropped 331.34 points, or 1.9%, to 17,501.65. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.57% shed 74.24 points, or 1.6%, to 4,552.57.
