Post No. 3,029 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's, Barron's &  Investor's Business Daily; the combined Sat. & Sun. issues of each of the Wall Street Journal &  Financial Times; Saturday's New York Times &   Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 17164.95 down 251.9 or 1.45%%  from Thursday's close of 17416.85. For the week the Dow was down 2.9%.  For the month the Dow was down 3.7%.  For the year the Dow is down 3.69%.  Of the Dow components only Visa   gained   and  29  declined. The  only and therefore biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Visa up $6.91 or 2.79%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise   was 3M down $3.65 and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 3.83%.

WSJ pB5 "Dow Industrials, S&P post largest monthly declines in a year" by Corrie Driebusch, Dan Strumpf says for the month the Dow lost 3.7%.  On Friday stocks fell in early trading after the Commerce Dept reported economic growth slowed in 4Q.  Chevron results topped views as asset sales & strength in its refining div helped offset a slide in oil prices.

IBD pB8 "Market offers no shelter; even utilities take hits" by Paul Whitfield says Friday's action was down shrply in higher vol while the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.  4Q GDP report fell short.

Sat NYT pB7 ""Declines cap a tough month", Sat. AJC pA12 "Major indexes lose more than 1%" by AP say major indexes closed lower fri, their 3rd decline for the week as the gov reported that the economy grew at a slower pace than expected in 4Q even as wages rose.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.35 down  from Friday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.57 (last year it was 15.09).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.83 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.58 (year ago it was 14.15) and  Monday's dividend yield is 2.54 up from  Friday's dividend yield of 2.50  (last year it was 2.20). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2672.86 down 39.22  from  Thursday's   numerator of 2712.08.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.10 down $1.30 from Thursday's  average closing price of $90.40.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.13  (WMT/XOM) down $1.52 from Thursday's median closing price of $87.65 (XOM/WMT.  The lowest volume was  3M and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $3,922  ($271,208 - $267,286).

1/30/15 Fri. 4:16 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks ended a turbulent Friday trading session with big losses, as selling on Wall Street accelerated in the final hour. Investors grappled with downbeat gross domestic product data, less-than-stellar earnings that overshadowed a bounce in crude-oil futures.A slower-than-expected economic growth number resulted in a flight to quality, with investors flocking into havens such as Treasurys and gold and unloading equities. Crude oil prices swung higher Friday, settling at $48.24 a barrel, driven by a big drop in U.S. rig counts as producers responded to oversupply. Oil also got a boost as traders ended bets that the price of oil will see a continued slide. The main indexes ended January with the biggest monthly losses in a year, while also recording a weekly decline, which marked the fourth weekly drop out of past five. The S&P 500 SPX, -1.30%  closed down 26.26 points, or 1.3%, at 1,994.99. The benchmark index fell 2.8% last week and ended the month with a loss of 3.1%. Only the energy sector finished the day with gains, while nine other sectors slumped. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -1.45%  dropped 251.90 points, or 1.5%, to 17,164.95. The blue-chip index declined 2.9% over the past week and lost 3.7% over the month. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.03% ended the day down 48.17 points, or 1%, at 4,635.24. The tech-heavy index lost 2.6% over the week and ended the month 2.1% lower.Phil Orlando, chief equity strategist at Federated Investors, said that a big miss in the GDP number had sent investors into bonds and out of stocks.“The headline number was very disappointing, so investors are buying bonds and selling stocks because they think the economy is decelerating. However, this number is likely to be revised upwards,” said Orlando. Treasurys trimmed their gains, but the yield on the 10-year note, which moves inversely to prices, was still down 6 basis points at 1.7%, after hitting the lowest level since May 2013 earlier. “Despite what the Fed said in their statement on Wednesday, if such sub-trend growth persists, the Fed will not tighten in June,” Orlando said. Jeff Kravetz, regional investment strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management, struck a more optimistic tone about the GDP data.
