The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 17554.28 up 39.05 or 0.22%  from Tuesday's close of 17515.23.  Of the Dow components  18  gained   and  12 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was and percentage-wise was UnitedHealthcare up $3.70 or 3.5%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was IBM down $4.86 or 3.1%.

As of the open of  the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Wednesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.61 up  from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.19  (last year it was 16.61).  Today's P/E estimate is 15.33 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 15.33 (year ago it was 14.82) and  today's dividend yield is 2.49 down from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.51  (last year it was 2.08). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

1/21/15 Wed. 4:30 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says the U.S. stock market ended Wednesday’s choppy trading day with modest gains, extending its winning streak to three sessions, as investors widely expect the European Central Bank to deliver on monetary stimulus at its key meeting on Thursday. Stocks shook off earlier worries and turned higher after media reports said that the ECB is considering a bond-buying program of about €50 billion a month to help revive the flagging eurozone economy. A proposal from the European Central Bank’s Frankfurt-based executive board calls for bond purchases that would last for a minimum of one year, according to The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday morning. Stock markets were further boosted by a jump in oil prices as well as news that the Bank of Canada announced a surprise rate cut.
The S&P 500 SPX, +0.47%   switched between gains and losses, but closed 9.58 points, or 0.5%, higher at 2,032.13. Energy sector stocks led the gains, jumping 1.8%, while all 10 sectors closed higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.22%  added 39.05 points, or 0.2%, to 17,554.28. Gains on the blue-chip index would be higher still if it were not for a big drop in IBM, which was shaving off 31 points. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.27%   gained 12.58 points, or 0.3%, to 4,667.42.Kristina Hooper, U.S. investment strategist at Allianz Global Investors, said a boost in confidence is due to a combination of ECB’s plan to inject liquidity into the system and higher oil prices.Hooper attributed recent market volatility to the absence of quantitative easing from the Federal Reserve. “The Fed’s QE had eliminated volatility over the past few years, but now, as the Fed moves towards normalizing or rasing rates, it makes sense that markets are choppy. Big swings in commodity and currency markets have also amplified stock market moves,” Hooper said.
Volatility aside, stocks are still a better place to be invested this years, contends Hooper.“We expect modest earnings growth this year, but because of foreign demand for U.S. assets, we might also see modest expansion in multiples paid, which means stocks will end the year with modest single-digit gains, though the journey is not going to be easy,” she added.Michael Gibbs, director of portfolio and technical strategy at Raymond James, said that the pullback in January so far was warranted given the overbought conditions at the very end of last year.

1/20/15 Tues. 4:49 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Carla Mozee says U.S. stocks ended Tuesday’s choppy session with marginal gains, as technology stocks led advances. The main benchmarks turned big early losses into gains, only to end roughly where they started the session.
Intraday volatility reflects uncertainty about the monetary policy in Europe, with investors appearing skeptical about the ability of central banks to combat deflationary forces. The European Central Bank is widely expected to announce a government-bond-buying program on Thursday; however, the program’s scope may disappoint investors, analysts have warned. U.S. markets were closed on Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.15%  closed 3.13 points, or 0.2%, higher at 2,022.55, with technology stocks in the lead. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.02%  ended with a marginal gain of 3.66 points to 17,515.23. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.44%  outperformed other indexes, adding 20.46 points, or 0.4%, to 4,654.85. Apple Inc, AAPL, +2.58%  the largest component on the index accounted for a big portion of the gains, as the stock rose 2.6%.Ten-year Treasurys TMUBMUSD10Y, +0.00%  rallied but trimmed initial gains. The yield declined by 1.2 basis points to 1.803% at the close. The yield on the benchmark debt has steadily declined over the past 12 months.“The big elephant in the room is deflation, and many portfolio managers are beginning to adjust their models to work in a low-interest-rate environment,” said Marty Leclerc, chief investment officer of Barrack Yard Advisors. “That adjustment period spells volatility.”Leclerc stressed that in the short term the environment will be favorable for stocks, as investors may justify higher price-to-earnings ratios when real interest rates are at zero.Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, said the day’s action is all about the fear of a global economic slowdown. “We are in the midst of earnings, and markets are not reacting to positive results, and the culprit is concern about Asia and Europe,” he said. “The bond market is afraid of deflation, which is why we are seeing such low yields on long-dated Treasurys.”In economic news, a gauge of confidence among home builders ticked down this month by one point to 57, staying close to the highest level since late 2005, according to National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo data released Tuesday morning.
