Post No. 3,143 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 18105.77 down 6.84 or 0.04% from Wednesday's close of 18112.61. Of the Dow components 9 gained and 21 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up $4.28 or 3.65%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down 89 cents and percentage-wise was Merck down 1.04%.
As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.53 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.46 (last year it was 16.15). Today's P/E estimate is 16.28 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 16.28 (year ago it was 14.53) and today's dividend yield is 2.24 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.25 (last year it was 2.17). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2713.31 down 1.03 from Wednesday's average numerator of 2714.34. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.44 down 4 cents from Wednesday's closing average of $90.48. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.64 (CAT/XOM) down 98 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $86.62 (CAT/XOM). The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume was GE.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $103 ($271,434 - $271,331).
4/16/15 Thurs. 4:46 pm MarketWatch by Wallace Witkowski and Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks closed slightly lower Thursday following a session of slight gains and declines as investors digested a mixed batch of economic reports and Federal Reserve speakers in light of a stream of better-than-expected earnings. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.04% which was up as high as 57 points on the session, closed down 6.84 points at 18,105.77. About two-thirds of the blue-chip indexes’s 30 components closed lower. The S&P 500 index SPX, -0.08% declined 1.64 points to finish at 2,104.99, with seven out of the indexes 10 major sectors declining, led by utilities and telecom stocks.Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.06% retreated 3.23 points to close at 5,007.79. An 18% rally in Netflix Inc. NFLX, +18.21% shares helped support the index. Shares hit a record-high of $568.75 after the video-streaming and DVD-rental company, after the close of trading on Wednesday, said that added 4.88 million subscribers in the first quarter.Choppy trading in stocks on Thursday came after a pullback from Wednesday’s advances, when better-than-expected earnings and a jump in oil prices sent the benchmarks close to record closing levels. The S&P 500 ended just 0.5% shy of its all-time close of 2,117.39 hit Monday, March 2, while the Dow average missed its record by 1%.Stocks ventured into positive territory after a handful of Fed members gave speeches, with some suggesting that a rate hike might not come soon, those gains vanished in the final hour of trading.“I think it’s the same flat trading we’ve been seeing for the last few sessions and we probably have to wait until earnings next week for some more meaningful move,” said Dan Greenhaus, chief strategist at BTIG, in emailed comments.Fed speakers: Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart said the central bank should wait on raising rates because of murky first-quarter economic data. Lockhart is a voting member of the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee this year.Meanwhile, Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester, who isn't a voter, said she would be comfortable with a rate hike “relatively soon” if economic growth regains momentum.
Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren, also a non-voter, said in London that economic data needs to improve before the Fed can start raising rates.Lastly, Stanley Fischer, the Fed’s Vice Chairman said the economy is already seeing a rebound but the rate of the recovery remains to be seen.Thursday’s Fed lineup came after comments on Wednesday from St. Louis Fed President James Bullard and Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker, when each made a case for raising interest rates soon.

4/15/15 Wed. 4:28 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says Wednesday’s gains on Wall Street sent key U.S. stock indexes close to record levels, as better-than-expected earnings and a jump in oil prices invigorated stock market bulls.Small-cap stocks led the rally, with the Russell 2000 closing at a fresh record. Broadly, investors appeared to have brushed off weaker-than-expected economic reports, while the ECB’s success rolling out its quantitative-easing program over the past month has provided a favorable backdrop for global stocks. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.51% closed 10.78 points, or 0.5%, higher at 2,106.62, within striking distance from the record level reached in March. Energy stocks rallied more than 2% following a nearly 6% jump by crude-oil futures, which settled at the highest level this year. Most estimates for quarterly results had been lowered heading into this earnings period, Abate noted. “Companies have become very adept at boosting their earnings per share by cutting cost, managing taxes and share buybacks,” he said.Investors also dismissed weaker-than-expected manufacturing data released ahead of the opening bell.In economic news, the Empire State manufacturing index plunged, falling to a negative reading, while, industrial production fell by more than expected in March. Both reports suggested a deceleration in economic growth. Meanwhile, a gauge of confidence among home builders rose in April, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo housing-market index released Wednesday.
