Post No. 3,129 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 17902.51 up 27.09 or 0.15% from Tuesday's close of 17875.42. Of the Dow components 19 gained, Travelers was unchanged and 10 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Home Depot up $1.29 and percentage-wise was Nike up 1.23%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Chevron down $1.88 and percentage-wise was Exxon down 1.97%.
As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.32 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.33 (last year it was 15.99). Today's P/E estimate is 16.08 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 16.08 (year ago it was 14.74) and today's dividend yield is 2.27 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.27 (last year it was 2.19). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2682.85 up 4.06 from Wednesday's average numerator of 2678.79. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.43 up 14 cents from Tuesday's closing average of $89.29. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $83.91 (PG/XOM) up 41 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $83.57 (PG/XOM). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $406 ($268,285 - $267,879).
4/8/15 Weds. 4:46 pm MarketWatch by Wallace Witkowski & William Watts says U.S. stocks closed slightly higher Wednesday in volatile trading following the release of Federal Reserve meeting minutes where several Federal Reserve officials had favored a June rate hike. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.27% closed up 5.57 points, or 0.3%, to 2,081.90, after being down as many as 3 points earlier in the day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.15% which had been up as many as 100 points before the minutes and down as many as 53 points after the minutes, finished up 27.09 points, or 0.2%, at 17,902.51.The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +0.83% which remained in positive territory for the session, closed up 40.59 points, or 0.8%, to 4,950.82.While several Fed members appeared to support a June rate hike back in mid-March, the meeting minutes don’t reflect a spate of economic reports, including last Friday’s jobs data, signaling softness in the U.S. economy.
“Whatever level of hawkishness may have been in place in March such that the FOMC thought it appropriate to drop ‘patient’ is, however modestly, less so today,” said Dan Greenhaus, chief strategist at BTIG, in emailed comments. What’s just as important is how divided Fed members seem, Greenhaus said, given the balanced dovish and hawkish tones of the minutes. What’s particularly interesting, Greenhaus points out, is language on holding the federal funds rate below its normal run level because “the headwinds that have been holding back the recovery will continue to exert some restraint on economic activity.”Ahead of the release of the minutes, New York Fed President William Dudley suggested that the bar for raising rates in June is high, given recent signs of economic weakness. Also, Federal Reserve Gov. Jerome Powell, in a speech, said he expects economic conditions to support a rate hike later this year. Powell also said he wasn’t troubled by equity valuations and that the Fed was unlikely to put “its toe in the water” and declare overly high stock prices to be a justification for a rate hike.Wednesday’s other big story was oil, which tanked after the Energy Information Administration reported that domestic-crude inventories rose a higher-than-expected 10.9 million barrels to 482.4 million. The increase comes as the market has been fretting about a global oil glut. Trading in the S&P 500 got a boost from Mylan N.V. MYL, +0.20% which jumped 15% on the heels of news that it was proposing to acquire Dublin-based pharmaceutical company Perrigo Co. PLC PRGO, +0.19% for $205 a share. Perrigo’s shares closed up 18% on the news. Seven of the 10 sectors of the S&P 500 closed higher, led by health care and consumer discretionary. Telecom and energy were the biggest laggards. Nike Inc. NKE, +0.07% and Home Depot Inc. HD, +1.13% led gainers among the Dow industrial components.

The following are excerpts from Wednesday morning's Blog:
A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & aily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 17875.42 down 5.43 or 0.03% from Monday's close of 17880.85. For the year the Dow is up 0.29%. Of the Dow components 14 gained and 16 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Chevron up $1.62 or 1.52%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Apple down $1.34 and percentage-wise was American Express down 1.63 %.
AJC pA13 "Early advance fizzles" by AP says stocks fell Tues although energy stocks rose with the price of oil, consumer discretionary stocks were among the biggest decliners.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2678.79 down 0.81 from Tuesday's average numerator of 2679.60.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.29 down 3 cents from Monday's closing average of $89.32. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $83.57 (PG/XOM) down 51 cents from Monday's median closing price of $84.08 (PG/XOM). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $81 ($267,960 - $267,879).
U.S. stocks closed slightly lower Tuesday, as an effort to build on Monday’s strong gains ran out of steam.
4/7/15 Tues. 4:50 pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & Barbara Kollmeyer says no top-tier economic reports came out, but mergers-and-acquisitions news helped to limit losses, with FedEx Corp. FDX, +2.69% among the S&P 500’s biggest advancers after the shipping giant said it would buy Dutch logistics company TNT Express. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.21% dipped by 4.29 points, or 0.2%, to close at 2,076.33. Only health care XLV, +0.24% and energy XLE, +0.06% avoided losses among the index’s 10 sectors. Energy-related stocks rose along with the U.S. oil benchmark, CLK5, +1.65% which jumped 3.5% and settled at its best level so far this year. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.03% inched lower by 5.43 points, or less than 0.1%, to end at 17,875.42, after the blue-chip gauge briefly showed a gain of more than 100 points. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.14% fell by 7.08 points, or 0.1%, to finish at 4,910.23.Tuesday’s slip came amid slow trading, as composite volume was at its second-lowest level so far this year, according to a Dow Jones markets data group. But the reversal to the downside still indicates some wariness among investors ahead of first-quarter earnings season, which unofficially kicks off Wednesday with Alcoa Inc.’s AA, +0.07% report after the close. The three main indexes all remain up between 0.5% and 0.6% for the week after Monday’s rally, which was attributed to bets that last Friday’s weak jobs report could delay interest-rate hikes. This week’s gains by equities should be accompanied by a dose of caution, according to some market experts. The monthly average for job creation in 2015 is still above 200,000 so far, and the dismal March report could see a revision when next month’s data are published, Stan Shamu, market strategist with IG, said in a note. Heard on the Street's Charley Grant explains that while Tesla's Q1 delivery numbers captured attention, they should be studied carefully by investors. “As far as the Fed is concerned, it is unlikely that one month’s data will make all the difference, and we know the central bank only has to be reasonably confident that inflation and jobs will trend toward target over the next couple of years for it to act,” Shamu said.Among chart watchers, BTIG’s Katie Stockton said her team is “not convinced that the pullback has fully matured yet.” A breakout above “intraday resistance” near 2,089 by the S&P 500 “would be an ‘all-clear’ signal,” said Stockton, BTIG’s chief technical strategist, in a note Tuesday. The S&P scored a record close on March 2, but has since held below that record level for five weeks.Tuesday’s economic news: Job openings rose to a 14-year high of 5.13 million in February, the Labor Department said.
Before the market’s open, Minnesota Fed President Narayana Kocherlakota, a leading dove and nonvoting member, said in a speech that no rate hikes are needed until 2016’s second half.Individual movers: Shares of FedEx Corp. FDX, +2.69% closed 2.7% higher after the company announced a $4.8 billion deal to buy TNT Express NV TNTE, +28.13% TNTEY, +26.11% In what could be the biggest U.S. leveraged buyout of the year so far, Informatica Corp. INFA, +4.28% agreed to be taken private by Permira Advisors LLC and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in a $5.3 billion deal. Informatica’s stock finished up 4.3%.Other markets: Oil rose, erasing early losses and adding to Monday’s big advance. Gold prices GCK5, -0.84% fell after a gain on Monday, while the dollar DXY, +0.90% pushed higher against major rivals.
In a catch-up move as investors returned from a long holiday weekend, European stocks SXXP, +1.64% finished with gains. Asian stock markets closed mostly higher.
