Post No. 3,155 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A special thank you to Mr. Wim Grommen of The Netherlands who sent me an excellent article that he wrote that analyzed the history of the Dow and how it adjusts the divisor for stock split. He makes a compelling argument that due to the maturing of the early Dow components, there was a need for them to split their shares. Since there are a larger universe of potential buyers once a company splits its shares, the shares are therefore worth more, which has nothing to do with the performance of the issuer. The result of these stock splits was to cause an artificial boost in the Dow which triggered the crash. Mr. Grommen also explains the mechanism of how the divisor is adjusted. A very interesting article. Interesting timing as well as I will be in The Hague May 19 for an Impact Investing Summit which two of my registered reps at www.BigPathCapital.com are hosting.
A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 18037.97 down 42.17 or 0.23% from Friday's close of 18058.69. For the year the Dow is up 1.21%. Of the 30 Dow components 11 gained and 19 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was DuPont up $3.29 or 4.6%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was UnitedHealth down $2.45 and percentage-wise was McDonald's down 2.33%.
WSJ pC4 "Biotech puts end to Nasdaq's five sessions of gains" by Saumya Vaishampayan says US stocks fell as declines in biotech stocks led the Nasdaq to snaps it winning streak. Apple reported a 33% increase in quarterly profit on surging iPhone sales & growth in China.
IbD pB3 "Nasdaq reverses lower: biotechs fare the worst" by Ken Shreve says Monday's action saw moderate losses on rising vol while the current outlook is confirmed uptrend.
FT p19 "Wall Street" says the S&P gained 0.2% while Nasdaq was up 0.1%.
NYT pB5 "Shaes decline in afternoon after promising morning and week of gains" by AP says shares dropped in the afternoon as health care firms dropped sharply. Mylan fell 6%.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.39 down from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.43 (last year it was 16.05). Tuesday's P/E estimate is 16.30 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 16.30 (year ago it was 14.70) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.26 up from Monday's dividend yield of 2.25 (last year it was 2.17). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2703.15 down 3.11 from Friday's average numerator of 2706.26. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.11 down 22 cents from Friday's closing average of $90.32. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.17 (CAT/XOM) up 39 cents from Friday's median closing price of $85.78 (CAT/XOM). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $311 ($270,626 - $270,315).
4/27/15 Mon. 4:42 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova and Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks closed slightly lower Monday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite retreating from record levels set on Friday. Investors consolidated last week’s solid gains and turned slightly cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve policy meeting, which begins on Tuesday. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.41% closed 8.76 points, or 0.4%, lower to 2,108.93, with seven of 10 main sectors posting losses. Healthcare stocks sold off, with the S&P 500 subindex falling 1.8%. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.63% ended the session 31.84 points, or 0.6%, lower at 5,060.25, with biotechnology stocks leading the losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.23% closed down 42.17 points, or 0.2%, to 18,037.97.Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones, said investors are relieved that earnings aren't as bad as feared. But she noted that the market is cautious ahead of the Fed meeting this week.“The stock market performance this earnings season is all about numbers beating lowered expectations. There is also less worry about Greece, while a combination of better economic news and ECB’s quantitative easing are underpinning prices,” Warne said.Apple Inc. AAPL, +1.82% posted a staggering 33% rise in earnings, and raised its dividend which is expected to report after the opening bell. Shares in the tech juggernaut rallied 2.16% in after-hours trade. The tech sector again shined on an otherwise mixed day for stocks as earnings season continues. WSJ’s Michael Casey reports on the WSJ Market Wrap. A Fed meeting and data: The economic calendar heats up midweek, with a preliminary reading on first-quarter gross domestic product due on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, Federal Reserve policy makers will deliver an updated policy statement after the conclusion of the central bank’s two-day meeting.Signe Roed-Frederiksen, senior analyst at Danske Bank, said the Federal Reserve could draw attention away from a soft patch in U.S. growth that many believe has been caused by temporary factors.
