Post No. 3,148 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 18058.69 up 20.42 or 0.11% from Wednesday's close of 18038.27. Of the Dow components 17 gained and 13 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was IBM up $4.88 or 2.95%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was 3M down $5.01 or 3.04%.
As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.44 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of (last year it was 16.22). Thursday's P/E estimate is 16.12 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 16.12 (year ago it was 14.87) and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.26 up from Wednesday's dividend yield of (last year it was 2.16). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2706.26 up 3.06 from Wednesday's average numerator of 2703.20. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.21 up 10 cents from Wednesday's closing average of $90.11. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.16 (CAT/XOM) up cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $ (CAT/XOM). The lowest volume was Nike and the highest volume was Microsoft.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $306 ($270,626 -$270,320).
4/23/15 Thurs. 4:44 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks posted records on Thursday on the back of relatively modest gains, which saw the Nasdaq Composite close at its highest level ever as the S&P 500 flirted with a record close. The record-setting Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.41% end up 20.89 points, or 0.4%, at 5,056, surpassing a 15-year closing high set March 10, 2000 during the dot-com boom. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.24% ended 4.97 points, or 0.2%, higher at 2,112.93, retreating from an intraday record of 2,120.52 set on Thursday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.11% added a relatively mundane 20.42 points, or 0.1%, to close higher at 18,058.69. The afternoon gains for stocks came as investors weighed a cascade of mixed earnings reports and weaker-than-forecast economic reports.Randy Frederick, Managing Director of Trading and Derivatives at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, said today’s gains are due to a combination of bullish factors: higher oil prices, weakening dollar and very low volatility. “There is also a seasonal bias, as second half of April tends to be bullish,” he noted.
Indeed, energy, utilities and telecommunications stocks were among the biggest gainers in the S&P 500.As for the softness that has been the case with some earnings reports, Kim Caughey Forrest, senior analyst at Fort Pitt Capital, said expectations going into the earnings season may not have been low enough.“Some companies are beating expectations by a narrow margin, but even the ones who are missing estimates are not punished as much because of low-interest-rate environment,” Forrest said suggesting that companies’ continued ability to service their debt is covering up their poor performance.Data: Sales of new single-family homes tumbled 11.4% to an annual rate of 481,000 in March, pulling back from a seven-year high reached a month earlier and hitting the slowest pace since November, according to government data released Thursday. However, economists caution that the large margin of error make single-month readings less reliable. The number of people who applied for regular state unemployment-insurance benefits ticked up 1,000 to 295,000 in the week that ended April 18, signaling a low level of layoffs, according to government data released Thursday. Markit’s preliminary report on the manufacturing purchasing managers index for April fell to 54.2 in April from 55.7 in March. Flash PMIs out of Europe released earlier on Thursday showed growth weakened at the start of the second quarter.Earnings: On an exceptionally busy day for earnings, shares of eBay Inc. EBAY, +3.77% jumped 3.8% after earnings showed its PayPal unit brought more revenue that its core marketplace division.

The following are excerpts from Thursday morning's Blog:
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily; the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall Street Journal & Financial Times: & Sunday's & Saturday's New York Times, & Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 17826.30 down 279.47 or 1.54% from Thursday's close of 18105.77. For the week the Dow was down 231.35 or 1.28% from lost Friday's close of 18057.65. For the year the Dow is up .02%. Of the Dow components all 30 declined. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was 3M down $4.18 and percentage-wise was American Express down 4.4%.
IBD pB9 "Bears rip major indexes, but some leaders calm" by Paul Whitfield says fast selling clobbered the major stock indexes Friday, ratcheting up the pressure on the uprend as Friday's action was down in rising vol and the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.
WSJ pB5 "US stocks crumble, ending lower for week" by Corrie Driebusch says US stocks fell sharply amid a selloff in global equities and a flurry of subpar US corp earnings. Weakness in 1Q corp earnings weighed on the market.
Sat. NYT pB3 "Shares fall in markets around the world as bullish sentiment seems to dissolve" by Peter Eavis says signs of complacency were evidence before stocks markets around the world tumbled Friday. Bloomberg terminals failed for 2 and 1/2 hours GE reported results that showed its industrial operations were performing solidly. American Express fell 4.4% after it reported earnings on Thurs. JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs reported impressive 1Q results this week.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2671.43 down 41.88 from Thursday's average numerator of 2713.31.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.08 down $1.46 from Thursday's closing average of $90.44. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.10 (CAT/XOM) down 54 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $85.64 (CAT/XOM). The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume was GE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $4,188 ($271,331 - $267,143).
4/17/15 Fri. 4:46 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova and Barbara Kollmeyer says U.S. stocks sold off on Friday as a confluence of intensifying Greek default fears and new stock-market regulation from China put investors on edge. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average suffered their worst one-day point decline in more than three weeks and ended the week with losses after two consecutive weekly gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -1.54% dropped 279.67 points, or 1.5%, to 17,826.10 and ended the week 1.3% lower. The blue-chip average turned negative for the year. Also helping push the Dow lower was American Express Co. AXP, -4.44% which slipped 4.4% on Friday after the payment-card company said its results were hurt by a stronger dollar. The carnage was equally intense in the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.52% which ended the session down 75.98 points, or 1.5%, to 4,931.81, losing 1.3% over the week.
The S&P 500 index SPX, -1.13% closed 23.83 points, or 1.1%, lower at 2,081.16 and recorded a 1% loss over the week.Recent gains in European equity markets and high valuations of U.S. stock indexes also made them vulnerable to a pullback, according to some analysts.Donald Ellenberger, senior portfolio manager at Federated Investors, said concerns over Greece and its ability to pay its debt are behind the selloff in risky assets such as equities.“Investors have piled into German bunds and credit spreads widened. But it was news from China’s regulators that triggered selling, as a lot of investors were sitting on gains after a run-up in equity markets,” Ellenberger said.Early morning fretting in China also helped stoke worries.
