Post No. 3,150 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 18080.14 up 21.45 or 0.12% from Thursday's close of 18058.69. For the week the Dow was up 253.80 or 1.42% from last Friday's close of 17826.30. Of the 30 Dow components 12 gained and18 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Microsoft up $4.53 or 10.45%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing down $1.47 or 0.98%.
As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.44 unchanged from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.44 (last year it was 16.16). Friday's P/E estimate is 16.12 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 16.12 (year ago it was 14.87) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.25 down from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.26 (last year it was 2.19). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2709.47 3.21 from Thursday's average numerator of 2706.26. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.32 up 11 cents from Thursday's closing average of $90.21. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.78 (CAT/XOM) down 38 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $86.16 (CAT/XOM). The lowest volume was Nike and the highest volume was Microsoft.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $321 ($270,947 - $270,626).
4/24/15 Fri. 4:36 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova and Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks rang up with solid gains as better-than-expected earnings propelled the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 to finish at all-time highs. The Nasdaq Composite advanced for five straight sessions, posting the biggest weekly gain since October 2014. Outside the technology and consumer-discretionary sectors the mood on Wall Street was less sanguine. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.23% ended 4.77 points, or 0.2%, higher at 2,117.70, narrowly topping its previous record close reached on March 2. The benchmark index recorded a 1.8% gain over the week. The Nasdaq COMP, +0.71% ended the session up 36.02 points, or 0.7%, at 5,092.08, and gained 3.3% over the week. Meanwhile, the Dow DJIA, +0.12% added 21.45 points, or 0.1%, to 18,080.14 and gained 1.4% over the week.Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at global brokerage Convergex, said Friday’s gains on Nasdaq were a good sign.“The new highs on Nasdaq are impressive because of how much conviction there is — it was not an accidental rally. Today’s follow-through suggests there is genuine confidence among investors, who are comfortable with current valuations,” Colas said. With the Nasdaq's record closing high, WSJ's Kristen Scholer takes a look at how the index could hit sustainable new highs going forward. Technology, biotech and pharmaceuticals will be key. Reasons to like tech: Guillaume Duchesne, equity strategist at BGL BNP Paribas in Luxembourg, said at the moment investors are gravitating toward stocks that are a play on stable growth, and information technology is one key part of this.

4/23/15 Thurs. 4:44 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks posted records on Thursday on the back of relatively modest gains, which saw the Nasdaq Composite close at its highest level ever as the S&P 500 flirted with a record close. The record-setting Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.41% end up 20.89 points, or 0.4%, at 5,056, surpassing a 15-year closing high set March 10, 2000 during the dot-com boom. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.24% ended 4.97 points, or 0.2%, higher at 2,112.93, retreating from an intraday record of 2,120.52 set on Thursday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.11% added a relatively mundane 20.42 points, or 0.1%, to close higher at 18,058.69. The afternoon gains for stocks came as investors weighed a cascade of mixed earnings reports and weaker-than-forecast economic reports.Randy Frederick, Managing Director of Trading and Derivatives at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, said today’s gains are due to a combination of bullish factors: higher oil prices, weakening dollar and very low volatility. “There is also a seasonal bias, as second half of April tends to be bullish,” he noted.
Indeed, energy, utilities and telecommunications stocks were among the biggest gainers in the S&P 500.As for the softness that has been the case with some earnings reports, Kim Caughey Forrest, senior analyst at Fort Pitt Capital, said expectations going into the earnings season may not have been low enough.“Some companies are beating expectations by a narrow margin, but even the ones who are missing estimates are not punished as much because of low-interest-rate environment,” Forrest said suggesting that companies’ continued ability to service their debt is covering up their poor performance.Data: Sales of new single-family homes tumbled 11.4% to an annual rate of 481,000 in March, pulling back from a seven-year high reached a month earlier and hitting the slowest pace since November, according to government data released Thursday. However, economists caution that the large margin of error make single-month readings less reliable. The number of people who applied for regular state unemployment-insurance benefits ticked up 1,000 to 295,000 in the week that ended April 18, signaling a low level of layoffs, according to government data released Thursday. Markit’s preliminary report on the manufacturing purchasing managers index for April fell to 54.2 in April from 55.7 in March. Flash PMIs out of Europe released earlier on Thursday showed growth weakened at the start of the second quarter.Earnings: On an exceptionally busy day for earnings, shares of eBay Inc.
