The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 18060.49 down 7.74 or 0.04%  from Tuesday's close of 18068.23. Of the 30   Dow components 19  gained and 11  declined.  The  biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $1.73 and percentage-wise was Intel up 1.21%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise was and percentage-wise was DuPont down $5.52 or 7.37%.

As of the open of  the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177.  Wednesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.52 down from Tuesday's   trailing P/E ratio of  16.56 (last year it was 16.37).  Wednesday's P/E estimate is 16.31 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 16.31 (year ago it was 14.78) and  Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.27 unchanged from  Tuesday's dividend yield of  2.27 (last year it was 2.15). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67  change in the Dow Index.

5/13/15 Wed. 4:25 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks closed virtually unchanged on Wednesday, as early gains faded by the end of the session. The S&P 500 and Dow declined for the third consecutive day, following disappointing monthly retail sales figures.
The initial reaction to economic data was positive, as investors bet that the Fed would delay interest rate increases this year due to sluggish economic growth. However, gains fizzled out by the end of the session, with the main indexes closing flat. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.03%  closed less than a point lower at 2,098.48. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.04%  ended 7.7 points lower at 18,060.49. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.11%  eked out a gain of 5.5 points, or 0.1%, settling at 4,981.Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, said markets remain stuck in a range.“Nothing seems to impact this market much on the negative side. But the weak retail sales suggest consumer spending, which accounts for two-thirds of the economy, is not taking off this quarter. This puts even a September rate hike into question,” Cardillo said.“But the bottom line why stock prices remain high is due to lack of alternatives,” he said. Randy Frederick, managing director of trading and derivatives at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, said he expected the market to remain range-bound until the Fed delivers its first rate hike.“It has been a battle between those who think good news is bad news and those who believe good news is good news. We believe the rates will go up later this year but uncertainty is keeping markets rangebound,” Frederick said.Data: The Commerce Department said sales at U.S. retailers were flat in April as Americans remained thrifty, a trend that’s intensified since the end of last summer despite cheaper gasoline. American spent more at restaurants and Internet sites, but they cut back on purchases of autos, home furnishings, electronic goods and fuel. Meanwhile, prices paid for imported goods fell 0.3% in April, as the lower cost of goods such as food and industrial supplies offset a rise in petroleum, the Labor Department said Wednesday. Excluding fuel, import prices fell by 0.4% last month. Stocks to watch: Shares of Dow component DuPont Co. DD, -6.76%  fell 6.8% after shareholders rebuffed a campaign by activist investor Nelson Peltz to take seats on the chemical firm’s board.Department-store chain Macy’s Inc. M, -2.45%  reported weaker-than-expected sales and profit in the first quarter. Shares declined 2.5%.
Ralph Lauren Corp. RL, -3.02%  shares fell 3% after the retailer said earnings in the first quarter fell 19% as foreign-currency impacts weighed on the company’s underlying revenue growth.
Pall Corp. PLL, +4.44% shares rose 4.4% after announcing a deal to be acquired by Danaher Corp. DHR, +1.57%
Williams Partners L.P. WPZ, +22.70%  is up 23% after gas natural-gas company Williams Companies Inc. WMB, +6.21%  announced an agreement to buy the public equity of Williams Partners in a stock deal valued at $13.8 billion. Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2707.68 down 7.54 from Monday's average numerator of 2713.22.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. 5/12/15 Tues. 4:34 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova and Carla Mozee says U.S. stocks on Tuesday declined for a second straight session, though losses were modest after indexes recovered from a bout of selling linked to fluctuations in Treasury yields. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.29%  closed 6.21 points, or 0.3%, lower at 2,099.12, with eight of its 10 main sectors finishing lower. Energy stocks posted modest gains thanks to a jump in oil prices. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.35%  shed 17.38 points, or 0.4%, to 4,976.19. U.S. bond prices recovered from an earlier bout of selling that followed a steep decline by European bonds. Yields rise as bond prices fall. Some analysts have pointed to a rise in inflation expectations in the eurozone as a factor driving bond prices down and yields higher. The widely watched yield on Germany’s 10-year bund TMBMKDE-10Y, +9.89%  leapt to nearly 0.7% Tuesday, from about 0.62% Monday, though that level remains very low by historical standards.Bruce Bittles, chief investment strategist at RW Baird & Co., said the stock market is stuck in a range.“There are too many people who are in the stock market who should not be, and that is because of the Fed policies. At this point, we don’t think the Fed will raise interest rates this year, and all the talk of rate hikes is aimed at knocking the stock prices down,” Bittles said.Bittles is watching the technical levels for clues about the direction of the market. “If the S&P 500 falls to 2,070, then we are looking for further selloffs. A fall below 2,040 would signal a correction,” he said. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note TMUBMUSD10Y, -1.35%  on Tuesday briefly climbed to the highest level since November, but reversed course and fell 2 basis points to 2.26% in late afternoon trade, according to Tradeweb. San Francisco Fed President John Williams said Tuesday that he wants the U.S. central bank to start raising rates “a bit earlier” so that the path of rates can be gradual. This suggests that a rate hike in June isn't out of the question.Stocks to watch: International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. IFF, -4.11%  said first-quarter profit rose 20%, despite the strong dollar’s impact on sales. But shares fell 4.1%.Gap Inc.
