Post No. 3,178 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Dailey; the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall Street Journal & Financial Times; and Saturday and Sunday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 18272.56 up 20.32 or 0.11% from Thursday's close of 18252.4. For the week the Dow is up 81.45 or 0.45 from last Friday's close of 18191.11. For the year the Dow is up 2.52%. Of the 30 Dow components 17 gained and 13 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Nike up $1.54 and percentage-wise was Cisco up 1.72%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Boeing down $1.08 and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 0.87%.
IBD pB9 "Stocks keep recent gains, protect fledgling uptrend" by Paul Whitfield says Friday's action was nearly flat in down trade as the current outlook is confirmed uptrend.
FT p12 "Wall street" by Mamta Badkar says US stocks were little changed Friday a day after the S&P hit a new closing high.
WSJ pB5 "S&P 50 finishes week at a record" by Corrie Driebusch says even as money flows into US stocks, there is little enthusiasm about buying shares.
Sat. NYT pB5 "After Thursday's rally, Wall street takes a nap" & Sat. AJC pA11 "S&P 500 index hits new high" by AP says the price of il fell slightly ending a 2nd straight week near $60 a barrel.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.71 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.69 (last year it was 16.16). Monday's P/E estimate is 16.33 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 16.31 (year ago it was 14.70) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.24 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.27 (last year it was 2.19). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2738.31 up 3.05 from Thursday's average numerator of 2735.26. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $91.28 up 10 cents from Thursday's closing average of $91.18. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.89 (XOM/CAT) up 4 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $87.85 (XOM/CAT). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $305 ($273,831 - $273,526).
5/15/15 Fri. 5:19 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks ended the day’s choppy session marginally higher Friday with the main indexes eking out weekly gains.
Investors grappled with weaker-than-expected economic reports which left the timing of the Federal Reserve’s next rate hike still uncertain for investors.A pair of manufacturing data released ahead of the market open, came in below expectations, underlying the recent trend of weakness poking through in the U.S. economy. The preliminary May reading on consumer sentiment fell to the lowest level in seven month, also well below forecasts.John Manley, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Advantage Funds, said the recent trend of weaker data is worrisome. “I am surprised about extended weakness, but I am not ready to get out of stocks yet, as there is nothing definitive yet to say the economy is going into a recession,” Manley said. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.08% closed 1.63 points, or 0.1%, higher at 2,122.73, a fresh record. The benchmark index gained 0.3% over the week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.11% added 20.32 points, or 0.1%, to 18,272.56, rising 0.5% over the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.05% ended the session 2.5 points lower at 5,048.29, but managed a 0.9% gain over the week.“Bond markets now appear to have stabilized, and if anything, they’re paring some of the losses, which is helping overall sentiment,” Erlam said. “The perception that the Fed will be forced to hold off on its first rate hike a little longer, following those weak retail-sales figures on Wednesday, is also supporting equity markets.”Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at OANDA, said the moves on Friday reflected calm “that has returned to the bond markets” after a volatile week in fixed-income trading.U.S. stocks have been weaving in and out of losses this week, as investors digested the battered bond markets and a string of mixed data that raised questions about the strength of the U.S. economy. This has spurred speculation the Fed will wait to raise interest rates until later this year, rather than in June, which some market participants had been forecasting.Former Fed Vice Chairman Donald Kohn said the debate over rate-hike timing is focused on a move between September and December.
