Post No. 3,162 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 17924.06 up 82.08 or 0.46% from Wednesday's close of 17841.98. Of the 30 Dow components 25 gained and 5 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Home Depot up $1.73 or 1.6%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Exxon down 59 cents and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down 0.64%.
As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.34 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.43 (last year it was 16.20). Thursday's P/E estimate is 16.30 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 16.30 (year ago it was 14.81) and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.28 up from Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.27 (last year it was 2.16). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2686.08 up 12.30 from Wednesday's average numerator of 2673.78. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.54 up 41 cents from Wednesday's closing average of $89.13. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.02 (CAT/XOM) down 57 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $87.59 CAT/XOM). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,230 ($268,608 - $267,738).
5/7/15 Thurs. 4:30 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks closed higher on Thursday, recovering some of the losses from the previous two sessions, as turbulence in bond markets in the U.S. and in Europe appeared to subside. A stronger-than-expected weekly jobless-claims report, showing layoffs remain at 15-year lows, set the tone for the Friday’s highly-anticipated nonfarm-payrolls report. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.38% closed 7.85 points, or 0.4%, higher at 2,088. Apart from the energy sector, which was hit following a drop in oil prices, nine of the main 10 sector finished higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.46% gained 82.08 points, or 0.5%, to 17,924.06. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.53% added 25.90 points, or 0.5%, to 4,945.54. Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategist at CMC Markets, said the stock market is likely to trade sideways for some time.“Markets have rallied so much, that there are excesses which either need to be flushed out in a correction or trade sideways for the rest of the year and the let the economy catch up,” Cieszynski said.“At this points, the reaction to the jobs report will depend on whether people think a strong reading is good news because the economy is doing better or whether people think a weak reading is good news because the interest rates will remain low for longer,” Cieszynski added. “When market have been trading sideways for the past four months, it gets confusing,” he noted.Earlier investors remained on the sidelines following big fluctuations in government bond markets in the U.S. and much of Europe, while losses in the energy sector kept a lid on the S&P 500 and Dow.Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank, said the stock market valuations are high and are likely to keep rising due to continued demand from investors who are searching for yield in current environment.“The higher the markets rise, the harder the fall is going to be. But lack of alternative investments may keep pushing investors into equities for some time,” McCain noted.Global equity markets earlier suffered sharp moves following a jump in German bond yields. The yield on 10-year German Bunds TMBMKDE-10Y, +0.95% jumped as high as 22 basis points to 0.8%, but has pared its gains to trade unchanged at 0.64%. U.S. 10-year Treasury yields TMUBMUSD10Y, -2.70% rose 6 basis points to 2.18%.Data: The number of people applying for U.S. unemployment benefits remains near a 15-year low, rising a scant 3,000 to 265,000 in the seven days stretching from April 26 to May 2, well below economists’ forecasts.
