Post No. 3,186 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 18041.54 down 190.48 or 1.04% from Friday's close of 18232.02. Of the 30 Dow components all 30 declined. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Apple down $2.92 or 2.2%.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.66 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.70 (last year it was 16.24). Tuesday's P/E estimate is 16.34 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 16.33 (year ago it was 14.81) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.29 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.29 (last year it was 2.21 ). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2703.69 down 28.54 from Friday's average numerator of 2732.23. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.12 down 95 cents from Friday's closing average of $91.07. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.59 (XOM/CAT) Down $1.98 cents from Friday's median closing price of $88.57 (XOM/CAT). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,854 ($273,223 - $270,369).
5/26/15 Tues. 4:41 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks sold off on Tuesday with the S&P 500 and Dow suffering their biggest one-day declines in three weeks. A sharp increase in the dollar spurred global investors to dump riskier assets such as equities and commodities, while driving them into havens such as Treasurys. The S&P 500 SPX, -1.03% closed off 21.86 points, or 1%, lower at 2,104.20, with all 10 main sectors declining. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -1.04% dropped 190.48 points, or 1%, to 18,041.54, while the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -1.11% ended the session 56.61 points lower, or down 1.1%, at 5,032.75.
U.S. markets were closed for Memorial Day on Monday. The dollar DXY, +0.92% rallied on the back of the inflation data on Friday and hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen, warning that a rate hike is still in the cards for 2015.Oil and gold prices tumbled on the dollar’s move, while Treasurys rose, sending the yield on the 10-year note down 7 basis points to 2.14%. A spike in the CBOE Volatility index VIX, +15.91% which measures implied volatility on the S&P 500, suggests investors are increasingly nervous about a possible pullback. JJ Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade, said a sudden spike in the dollar following remarks made Friday by Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen continued to hit markets, damping earnings expectations from companies already struggling from falling revenues due to currency fluctuations. But Kinahan stressed that the overall trend is still positive in the market. “The spike in the Vix means people are finally buying protection and also shifting into Treasuries again. But until we breach 2,100, Tuesday’s move is not a big deal,” he noted.Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategist at CMC Markets, said speculation that rate hikes can come sooner are back.“The Federal Reserve is data-dependent and with all the weaker data during the winter, investors had previously written off rate hikes this summer, but stronger data is shifting those expectations,” Cieszynski said. Cieszynski also noted that seasonally the period between end of May and the next earnings season is usually weak for stock prices.Positive readings on recent economic data, including a pick up in inflation and job gains, have stoked fears that an interest-rate hike may come sooner than anticipated, unnerving some investors. On Tuesday, a report on durable-goods orders showed signs of revival in business investment in April.

5/22/15 Fri. 4:41 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova and Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks ended Friday’s choppy session modestly lower, though the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite Index booked modest weekly gains. On Friday, stocks sold off toward the end of the session, after Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen said she still expected the central bank to raise interest rates sometime this year, as a part of a speech delivered in Providence, R.I., discussing the U.S. economic outlook. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.22% closed 4.76 points, or 0.2%, lower at 2,126.06, but gained 0.2% over the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.29% closed 53.72 points, or 0.3%, lower to 18,232.02 and ended the week with a 0.2% loss. Meanwhile the Nasdaq COMP, -0.03% ended the session 1.43 points lower at 5,089.36, but posted a 0.8% gain over the week.Stocks were already weaker in early trade after a stronger-than-expected reading of a measure of price inflation. An increase in the consumer-price index along with the improving labor market gives the Federal Reserve reserve ammunition to raise interest rates sooner than later, even as minutes from the most recent meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee seemed to suggest that a June rate hike was unlikely. Yellen’s comments on Friday added support to the view that Fed is preparing to hike rates sometime this year, if not as early as June, despite economic reports that have at times suggested that the U.S. economy wasn’t on the firm economic footing after the Great Recession. Similar to previous remarks, Yellen in her Friday speech referred to a string of weak economic data as “transitory.” The U.S.’s central bank boss stated that economic signs looked strong enough for the Fed to hike rates this year, followed by gradual moves thereafter.Maris Ogg, president at Tower Bridge Advisors, said the market is digesting the possibility of a rate hike this year pretty well. “At this point investors know that a rate increase means an improving economy. A 25 or 50 basis point increase will not affect the companies or the economy much and starting from zero means it will take a while before rates start having a negative effect on markets,” she said. “The second half of this year will show us whether housing and capital expenditures really pick up and whether that will drive earnings in 2016,” Ogg added. As long as bond yields are moving sideways or lower, equity investors are “happy putting money to work,” said Chris Weston, chief market strategist at IG, in a note. He added that the CBOE Volatility index VIX, +0.17% is testing the year’s lows around 12.11%, and is now 33% below the five-year average. U.S. stocks gained on Thursday, with both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite inching toward record territory. CVS Health agreed to buy pharmacy-benefits provider Omnicare. U.S. consumer prices rose a seasonally adjusted 0.1% in April, according to the Labor Department. Energy prices slumped 1.3% last month while food prices were unchanged. The core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, jumped 0.3%, driven by another increase in housing expenses and a gain in medical care costs. In corporates, shares of Deere & Co. DE, +4.35% are up 4.4% after financial results. Campbell Soup Co. CPB, +2.09% profit beat expectations, but sales slipped. Shares rose 2.1%.Shares of Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ, +2.75% rose 2.8% after earnings squeezed past forecasts late Thursday, but the company also provided a cautious outlook.Marvell Technology Group Ltd. MRVL, -8.56% fell 8.6% after the chip maker late Thursday after announced its chief executive will retire.Expedia Inc. EXPE, +6.71% shares jumped 6.7% after the travel booking company said it sold its majority stake in eLong Inc. to a group of buyers for $671 million. Other markets: European stocks SXXP, -0.03% finished slightly lower on Friday, but booked the best weekly gain in six weeks. Asia stocks ADOW, +0.37% rose with the Shanghai Composite Index SHCOMP, +2.83% marking its best performance since 2008.Oil prices CLN5, -1.37% fell 1.7%, to settle at $59.72 a barrel, the same level prices settled a week ago. Gold prices GCM5, +0.12% lost 10 cents to end at $1,204 an ounce, recording their first weekly loss in three weeks. The dollar DXY, +0.78% rose against the euro EURUSD, -0.8819% booking its first weekly gain in five weeks.
