Post No. 3,176 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 18272.56 up 20.32 or 0.11%  from Thursday's close of 18252.4.  For the week the Dow is up 81.45 or 0.45 from last Friday's close of 18191.11. Of the 30   Dow components 17  gained and 13  declined.  The  biggest gainer dollar-wise was Nike up $1.54 and percentage-wise was Cisco up 1.72%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise was Boeing down $1.08 and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 0.87%.

As of the open of  the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177.  Friday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.69 up from Thursday's   trailing P/E ratio of  16.52 (last year it was 16.11).  Friday's P/E estimate is 16.31 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 16.31 (year ago it was 14.78) and  Friday's dividend yield is 2.27 unchanged from  Thursday's dividend yield of  2.27 (last year it was 2.23). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2738.31 up 3.05 from Thursday's average numerator of 2735.26.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $91.28 up 10 cents from Thursday's closing average of $91.18.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.89 (XOM/CAT) up 4 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $87.85 (XOM/CAT).  The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Friday   morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $305  ($273,831 - $273,526).

5/15/15 Fri. 5:19 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says  U.S. stocks ended the day’s choppy session marginally higher Friday with the main indexes eking out weekly gains.
Investors grappled with weaker-than-expected economic reports which left the timing of the Federal Reserve’s next rate hike still uncertain for investors.A pair of manufacturing data released ahead of the market open, came in below expectations, underlying the recent trend of weakness poking through in the U.S. economy. The preliminary May reading on consumer sentiment fell to the lowest level in seven month, also well below forecasts.John Manley, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Advantage Funds, said the recent trend of weaker data is worrisome. “I am surprised about extended weakness, but I am not ready to get out of stocks yet, as there is nothing definitive yet to say the economy is going into a recession,” Manley said. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.08%  closed 1.63 points, or 0.1%, higher at 2,122.73, a fresh record. The benchmark index gained 0.3% over the week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.11%  added 20.32 points, or 0.1%, to 18,272.56, rising 0.5% over the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.05%  ended the session 2.5 points lower at 5,048.29, but managed a 0.9% gain over the week.“Bond markets now appear to have stabilized, and if anything, they’re paring some of the losses, which is helping overall sentiment,” Erlam said. “The perception that the Fed will be forced to hold off on its first rate hike a little longer, following those weak retail-sales figures on Wednesday, is also supporting equity markets.”Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at OANDA, said the moves on Friday reflected calm “that has returned to the bond markets” after a volatile week in fixed-income trading.U.S. stocks have been weaving in and out of losses this week, as investors digested the battered bond markets and a string of mixed data that raised questions about the strength of the U.S. economy. This has spurred speculation the Fed will wait to raise interest rates until later this year, rather than in June, which some market participants had been forecasting.Former Fed Vice Chairman Donald Kohn said the debate over rate-hike timing is focused on a move between September and December.

The following are excerpts from Friday morning's Blog:

A  read of the print editions of  Friday's  Wall Street Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's Business Dailey, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution   & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 18252.4 up 191.75 or 1.06%  from Wednesday's close of 18060.49. For the year the Dow is up 2.41%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Cisco down 30 cents or 1.02 %.

WSJ pC4 "S&P 500 reaches a record" by Dan Strumpf says the S&P 500 rose to a record as stocks advanced broadly, taking cues from gains in overseas stock markets & stability in bonds. Cisco said 3Q net income rose 12% on rev that increased 5.1%.

NYT pB8 "market rebounds after three days of losses" & AJC pA9 "Stocks break 3 day slump" by AP says US stocks rebounded Thursday due to encouraging data on the US job market and inflation.

FT p19 "Wall Street" by Mamta Badkar, Eric Platt says US stocks gained Thursday as yields on US bonds retreated from highs and the number of weekly unemployment claims fell.

IBD pB3 "Nasdaq's 1.4% gain turns market back to uptrend" by Paul Whitfield says stocks galloped ahead Thurs as the market's condition switched to a confirmed uptrend.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2735.26 up 28.74 from Wednesday's average numerator of 2706.52.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $91.18 up 96 cents from Wednesday's closing average of $90.22.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.85 (XOM/CAT) up 35 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $87.50 (XOM/CAT).  The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Thursday   morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $2,874  ($273,526 - $270,652).

5/14/15 Thurs. 5:06 pm MarketWatch by  Wallace Witkowski and Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks ended higher Thursday, with the S&P 500 index ringing up a new closing high, overshadowing a string of small losses on the week. The rally for stocks comes as U.S. economic reports offered no real clarity on when the Federal Reserve may hike rates for the first time since 2006. A report on weekly jobless claims unexpectedly declined, pointing to stability in the employment picture, while a measure of inflation suggests that headline inflation is falling below the central bank’s 2% target— the target the Fed is looking for before it feels comfortable lifting rates. The S&P 500 SPX, +1.08% rallied 22.62 points, or 1.1%, to close at 2,121.10, on track for a weekly gain of 0.2%. The benchmark index also registered the highest close since April 24, when the S&P 500 settled at 2,117.69. Tech and consumer staples performed best among the benchmark’s 10 sectors, which all closed in positive territory. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.06%  surged 191.75 points, or 1.1%, to close at 18,252.24, just 0.2% off its all-time closing high of 18,288.63 set on March 2. The blue-chip stock index is on pace for a weekly gain of 0.3%. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +1.39% gained 69.10 points, or 1.4%, to close at 5,050.80, tracking a nearly 1% weekly gain.
Thursday’s jump comes after months of a mostly sideways market. Over the past six months, a lack of conviction in the market, mixed economic data, and the running debate over when the Federal Reserve will start raising rates have kept investors trying to figure out just where stocks are heading, said Brad McMillan, chief investment officer for Commonwealth Financial. “What we do find is that we’re starting to bottom out at higher levels and move up,” McMillan said. “The factors that make us worry are not as significant as we thought. McMillan believes the market may see a real breakout in another month if economic data, particularly retail sales, firm up. It may be that investors have been a little distracted. Investors have been fixated on a volatile bond market, among other things.“A breakout has been elusive for the SPX as investors have focused beyond the equity market,” said Katie Stockton, chief technical strategist at BTIG, in a note Thursday.
