Post No. 3,181 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 18232.02 down 53.72 or 0.29%  from Thursday's close of 18285.74. For the week the Dow was down 40.54 or 0.22% from last Friday's close of 18,272.56. Of the 30   Dow components 6  gained and 24  declined.  The  biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Goldman Sachs up $2.85 or 1.3%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing down $2.54 or 1.72%.

As of the open of  the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177.  Friday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.70 down from Thursday's   trailing P/E ratio of  16.73 (last year it was 16.18).  Friday's P/E estimate is 16.33 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 16.33 (year ago it was 14.70) and  Friday's dividend yield is 2.29 up from  Thursday's dividend yield of  2.24 (last year it was 2.22). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2732.23 down 8.05 from Thursday's average numerator of 2740.28.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $91.07 down 27 cents from Thursday's closing average of $91.34.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.57 (XOM/CAT) up 30 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $88.27 (XOM/CAT).  The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Friday   morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $805  ($274,028 - $273,223).

5/22/15 Fri. 4:41 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova and Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks ended Friday’s choppy session modestly lower, though the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite Index booked modest weekly gains. On Friday, stocks sold off toward the end of the session, after Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen said she still expected the central bank to raise interest rates sometime this year, as a part of a speech delivered in Providence, R.I., discussing the U.S. economic outlook. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.22%  closed 4.76 points, or 0.2%, lower at 2,126.06, but gained 0.2% over the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.29%  closed 53.72 points, or 0.3%, lower to 18,232.02 and ended the week with a 0.2% loss. Meanwhile the Nasdaq COMP, -0.03%  ended the session 1.43 points lower at 5,089.36, but posted a 0.8% gain over the week.Stocks were already weaker in early trade after a stronger-than-expected reading of a measure of price inflation. An increase in the consumer-price index along with the improving labor market gives the Federal Reserve reserve ammunition to raise interest rates sooner than later, even as minutes from the most recent meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee seemed to suggest that a June rate hike was unlikely. Yellen’s comments on Friday added support to the view that Fed is preparing to hike rates sometime this year, if not as early as June, despite economic reports that have at times suggested that the U.S. economy wasn’t on the firm economic footing after the Great Recession. Similar to previous remarks, Yellen in her Friday speech referred to a string of weak economic data as “transitory.” The U.S.’s central bank boss stated that economic signs looked strong enough for the Fed to hike rates this year, followed by gradual moves thereafter.Maris Ogg, president at Tower Bridge Advisors, said the market is digesting the possibility of a rate hike this year pretty well. “At this point investors know that a rate increase means an improving economy. A 25 or 50 basis point increase will not affect the companies or the economy much and starting from zero means it will take a while before rates start having a negative effect on markets,” she said. “The second half of this year will show us whether housing and capital expenditures really pick up and whether that will drive earnings in 2016,” Ogg added. As long as bond yields are moving sideways or lower, equity investors are “happy putting money to work,” said Chris Weston, chief market strategist at IG, in a note. He added that the CBOE Volatility index VIX, +0.17%  is testing the year’s lows around 12.11%, and is now 33% below the five-year average.   U.S. stocks gained on Thursday, with both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite inching toward record territory. CVS Health agreed to buy pharmacy-benefits provider Omnicare. U.S. consumer prices rose a seasonally adjusted 0.1% in April, according to the Labor Department. Energy prices slumped 1.3% last month while food prices were unchanged. The core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, jumped 0.3%, driven by another increase in housing expenses and a gain in medical care costs. In corporates, shares of Deere & Co. DE, +4.35%  are up 4.4% after financial results. Campbell Soup Co. CPB, +2.09%  profit beat expectations, but sales slipped. Shares rose 2.1%.Shares of Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ, +2.75% rose 2.8% after earnings squeezed past forecasts late Thursday, but the company also provided a cautious outlook.Marvell Technology Group Ltd. MRVL, -8.56%  fell 8.6% after the chip maker late Thursday after announced its chief executive will retire.Expedia Inc. EXPE, +6.71%  shares jumped 6.7% after the travel booking company said it sold its majority stake in eLong Inc. to a group of buyers for $671 million. Other markets: European stocks SXXP, -0.03%  finished slightly lower on Friday, but booked the best weekly gain in six weeks. Asia stocks ADOW, +0.37%  rose with the Shanghai Composite Index SHCOMP, +2.83%  marking its best performance since 2008.Oil prices CLN5, -1.37%  fell 1.7%, to settle at $59.72 a barrel, the same level prices settled a week ago. Gold prices GCM5, +0.12%  lost 10 cents to end at $1,204 an ounce, recording their first weekly loss in three weeks. The dollar DXY, +0.78%  rose against the euro EURUSD, -0.8819% booking its first weekly gain in five weeks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 18285.74 up 0.34 or 0%  from Wednesday's close of 18285.40. For the year the Dow is up 2.60%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Johnson & Johnson down $1.18 or 1.14%.

WSJ pC4 "S&P 50 edges up to new high" by Dan Strumpf says the S&P added 4.97 points to close at a new high at 2130.82.  The Dow closed only 0.1% shy of its Tuesday record of 18312.30. With 1Q earnings season largely complete many investors are sitting tight awaiting market moving catalysts.

NYT pB8 "Oil prices lift market in quiet trading" & AJC pA13 "Mixed bag for markets" by AP says there is a bit of a wait and see attitude by investors.

IBD pB3 "Market shrugs off raft of bad data; stocks rise" by Paul Whitfield says Thursday's action was up in mixed volume while the current outlook is confirmed uptrend.

FT p21 "Wall Street" by Mamta Badkar, Pan Kwan Yuk says a rally in oil prices lifted energy stocks leading the S&P higher.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2740.28 up 0.05 from Wednesday's average numerator of 2740.23.

5/21/15 Thurs. 4:45 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says  U.S. stocks
U.S. stocks ended slightly higher on Thursday, sending the S&P 500 to a fresh record. The main indexes continued to trade in narrow ranges in the absence of a major catalyst to move prices either direction.

Investors mostly brushed off a flurry of weaker-than-expected economic data a day after minutes from Federal Reserve’s last meeting signaled a June interest-rate hike was unlikely.

The S&P 500 SPX, +0.23%  added 4.97 points, or 0.2%, to settle at 2,130.82—an all-time closing high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.00%  ended the day virtually flat at 18,285.74. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.38%  gained 19.05 points, or 0.4%, to 5,090.79.The main indexes need only modest gains from current levels to achieve a so-called trifecta, an occasion when all three post record closes on the same day, an event that hasn’t occurred since 1999.Michael Antonelli, equity sales trader at RW Baird, pointed out that the stock market has been on a slow grind higher despite pessimistic sentiment and outflows.“The fact that people have been shifting money out of U.S. equity funds and the bullish sentiment has been at very low levels for weeks, makes us feel as though it’s not the top,” Antonelli said.“Breaking out to new records is also a bullish sign, but we are grinding higher most likely because corporations keep buying their own stocks,” he said.He also argued that markets are too focused on the Federal Reserve instead of fundamentals like earnings and the economy. “Until something drastic happens, markets will keep grinding higher, because the primary trend is intact,” he said.James Abate, chief investment officer at Centre Funds, said it was dangerous to see stock prices being bid higher while the economy seems to be tepid at best.“Corporations are price insensitive and are buying their own stocks at high valuations, but until there is a catalyst, we expect this to continue,” Abate said.
