Post No. 960 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of March 21, 2011.

A read of Monday's Barron's, Monday's Investor's Business Daily, the combined Saturday/Sunday issues of each of the Wall Street Journal & Financial Times, & Sunday's & Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,380.05 down 29.44 points or 0.24% from Thursday's close of 12,409.49. For the week the Dow is up 3.33 points or 0.026% from last Friday's close of 12,376.72. For the year the Dow is up %. Of the 30 Dow components 8 gained and 22 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise dollar wise was Chevron CVX $109.66 +0.72 0.66% 6,732,737 NYSE and percentage-wise was Merck MRK $33.67 +0.34 1.02% 18,380,947 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Boeing BA $73.47 -0.82 1.1% 3,099,484 NYSE and percentage-wise was Cisco CSCO $17.65 -0.26 1.45% 82,647,244 NASDAQ-GS.

WSJ pB5 "Alcoa, Cisco lead Dow lower" by Donna Yesalavich says stocks fell as investors exercised caution ahead of a potential shutdown of the fed gov & the start of US firms' 1Q earnings report. Alcoa was among the Dow's weakest components, falling 20 cents ahead of Mon's earnings report, the unofficial kick-off of the 1Q corporate filing season. Other decliners included Cisco, down 26 cents, Boeing down 82 cents. Merck rose 34 cents. Johnson & Johnson is charted saying it led Monday's charge, Cisco jumped Wed after its CEO said cost cuts might be coming and Alcoa fell Mon, all 3 are charted.

Sat. NYT pB7 "Sahes slip as oil prices jump on Libya tensions" by Chris Hauser says stocks slipped as oil prices climbed further on Fri, with traders bettign that the conflict in Libya could disrupt oil porudction there for longer than expected. Crude prices have surged as the fighting in Libya, an OPEC member has appeared to turn into a stalemate.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Indexes fall in slow trade, but gold stocks perk up" by Paul Whitfield says stocks retreated Fri, but volume remained sluggest as the current outlook remains in a confirmed uptend.

As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 15.04 down from Friday's trailing P/E of 15.08 (year ago it was 17.17.15); the P/E estimate is 12.73 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.75 (year ago it was 14.00), and the dividend yield is 2.37 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.37 (last year it was 2.48). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,635.77 down 3.91 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,639.66. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.53 down $0.13 from yesterday's average closing price of $54.66. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.56 (JPM/AXP) down 0.22 from Thursday's median closing price of $46.78. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $59.58 -0.21 0.35% 1,924,142 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.48 -0.13 0.96% 86,948,194 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $391 ($163,966 - 163,,).

MarketWatch Friday 4/8/11 4:58 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell Friday after crude-oil prices surged above $112 a barrel and as budget talks to avoid a government shutdown faced a midnight deadline. The price of oil shows no sign of letting up. Also, how will a potential government shutdown affect the strength of the U.S. dollar? Budget negotiations on Capitol Hill weighed on Wall Street, with the political parties still at odds over spending just hours from what could be the first U.S. government closure in 15 years. “Nobody expects this to last a long time, but the divide between Republicans and Democrats is extremely large, especially if you include the Tea Party,” analyst Hugh Johnson said of the partisan battle. Caution on Friday was partially attributable to the coming earnings season.
“Part of the story is everybody’s waiting in great anticipation of the earnings season, which effectively starts Monday and gets on a real roll a week from Monday,” said Johnson, chairman of Hugh Johnson Advisors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 12,380, -29.59, -0.24%) fell 29.44 points, or 0.24%, to 12,380.05. But the loss wasn’t enough to tip the index lower for the week. It pushed out a tiny gain of 0.03%. Off 0.3% for the week, the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (SPX 1,328, -5.34, -0.40%) closed 5.34 points, or 0.4%, lower at 1,328.17, with financials the greatest laggard and energy up the most among the benchmark’s 10 industry groups.
The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,780, -15.72, -0.56%) fell 15.72 points, or 0.56%, to 2,780.42, down 0.3% from last Friday’s finish. For every stock rising, more than two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where more than 800 million shares traded by 4 p.m. Eastern. Corporate results should help investors gauge the overall earnings impact of events in the Middle East, North Africa and Japan.
“We’ve already received hints that earnings will be impacted, energy companies will benefit and airlines will be penalized by the rise in oil prices,” Johnson said.
On Friday, crude-oil futures for May delivery (CLK11 113.11, +2.81, +2.55%) rose $2.49 to finish at $112.79 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Higher fuel prices constitute an energy tax on consumers and corporations, with the price tag not insignificant, said Johnson, who calculates oil’s spike from $83 to $108 a barrel would cost an added $152.2 billion over a year’s time. Johnson came to the figure by multiplying the price rise by the 18.8 million in barrels consumed by the U.S. each day, times the number of days in the year to reach his estimate.
Among stocks on the move, Expedia Inc.’s (EXPE 25.30, +2.90, +12.95%) shares rose 13% a day after the online travel company said it would split into two companies.
On Friday, the Justice Department approved search giant Google Inc.’s (GOOG 577.90, -0.26, -0.05%) purchase of ticketing-software firm ITA Software as long as ITA’s products remained available to Google’s competitors. Expedia and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT 26.05, -0.02, -0.08%) were among the companies that objected to Google’s planned $700 million acquisition of ITA.
