Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,285.15 up 14.16 points or 0.12% from Wednesday's close of 12,270.99. For the year the Dow is up 6.11%. WSJ pC6 "Earnings help DJIA turn a bad day good" by Kristina Peterson says stocks finished higher after a late rally, as earnings optimism outpaced a disappointing round of weekly jobs data. The Dow turned positive late in the session after the House of Rep approved a law to fund the gov through fiscal '11. Bank of America lost 14 cents over the European sovereign debt crisis. Kraft is charted under Good News saying it was the biggest Dow gain.

NYT pB8 "Critical reports on banks weigh on fin'l shares" by Christine Hauser says fin'l shares tumbled on Thurs after gov reports critcized banks involved in the mortgage crisis, but stocks in the broader market were little changed. JPMorgan one of the banks signing a mortgage consent agreement, said it would add as many as 3,000 employees to meet the new regulatory demands and its shares were down 2.8%.

Fin Times p22 "Goldman Sachs slips as 2 year mis-selling probe is referred to SEC" by Michael Stothard says Goldman led fin'l stocks lower after a Senate report said that the bank misled investors, while in the wider markets Wall St was flat after the disappointment caused by weak jobs data were offset by some positive 1Q earnings reports. JPMorgan fell 2.8%.

USA Today p4B "S&P 500 pulls out of 4 sessions lump" by Bloomberg says stocks rose Thurs, erasing an early slump, as the House approved a spending bill that will avert a gov shutdown & Supervalu led a rally in consumer staples shares after earnings topped analysts' estimates. Exxon added 28 cents and Chevron climbed $1.07 as oil rose a 2nd day.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks trim losses, end narrowly mixed" by Paul Whitfield says stocks reversed off the day's lows, clsoing narrowly mixed as the current outlook remains uptrend under pressure.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.79 up from Thursday's trailing P/E of 14.77 (year ago it was 17.31); the P/E estimate is 12.73 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 12.73 (year ago it was 14.00), and the dividend yield is 2.39 down from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.37 (last year it was 2.45). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,623.23 up 1.87 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,621.36. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.11 up 0.06 from Wednesday's average closing price of $54.05. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.42 (AXP/JPM) down 0.71 from Wednesday's median closing price of $46.13. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $92.94 +0.08 0.09% 2,271,485 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.13 +0.14 1.06% 113,805,098 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $187 ($162,323 - $162,134).

MarketWatch Thursday 4/14/1 4:14 by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks made a late-session dash higher Thursday, pushing the Dow average and S&P 500 to a higher close, helped by a rally in consumer staples shares and a gains in natural resource stocks alongside higher oil and gold prices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 12,285.15, +14.16, +0.12%) ended up 14.16 points, or 0.1%, at 12,285.15, with Kraft Foods Inc. (KFT 33.00, +0.05, +0.15%) and Coca-Cola Co. Shares of supermarket chain Supervalu (SVU 10.59, -0.02, -0.17%) surged 17% after it issued a rosy forecast. An earlier drop in the S&P 500 to 1,302 likely pulled in investors looking to buy the index near its support level of 1,300, said Elliot Spar, options/markets strategist at Stifel Nicolaus. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,760.22, -1.30, -0.05%) ended down 1.3 point, or 0.1%, at 2,760.22.
