A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Investor's Business Daily, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Georgia - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,393.6 down 6.13 points or 0.05% from Monday's close of 12,400.03. For the year the Dow is up 7.05%. WSJ pC5 "Boeing, GE weigh on DJIA" by Brendan Conway says blue chip stocks snapped a 2 day winning streak as major indexes closed nearly flat in another light volume trading session. GE lost 20 cents and Boeing dropped 72 cents. Investors viewed the rebalancing of the Nasdaq-100 to downplay Apple as positive for other tech stocks such as Microsoft, which was up 23 cents and Cisco, up 16 cents. Merck fell 11 cents after it agreed to buy Inspire Pharmaceuticals.

Fin Times p24 "Texas Instruments' $6.5 bil move for rival sends chip sector higher" by Michael Stothard says the tech sector was in focus after TI said it would buy National Semiconductor and Nasdaq OMX said it would rebalance the nasdaq 100 index. Shares in Procter & Gamble were in focus after the world's largest consumer goods firm made its final exist from the food sector, selling its Pringles potato chip biz to Diamond for $2.35 bil.

NYT pB13 "Commodities gain as inflation worries take hold" by AP says stock indexes changed little in a quite day on Wall St, when minutes from the Feds showed few signs the central bank would make changes to the stimulus program. Trading volume remained light.

USA Today p6B "Stocks take a break on slow news day" by AP says a quiet day on Wall St left stock indexes little changed after minutes from the most recent meeting of the Fed's policy committee showed few signs that the central bank plans on making changes to its stimulus program.

Inv. Bus Daily pA1 "Stocks relinquish gains following Fed minutes" by Vincent Mao says the major stock indexes ended narrowly mixed Tues as the Fed minutes raised tightening fears & took the steam out of a comeback rally. The current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 15.06 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E of 15.07 (year ago it was 17.10); the P/E estimate is 12.75 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.75 (year ago it was 14.00), and the dividend yield is 2.37 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.37 (last year it was 2.49). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,637.55 down .86 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,638.41. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.58 up 0.07 cents from Monday's average closing price of 54.51. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.01 (JPM/AXP) up 0.13 from Monday's median closing price of $45.88. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $93.39 -0.25 0.27% 2,200,316 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.46 +0.02 0.15% 60,982,219 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $86 ($163,841 - $163,755).

MarketWatch Tuesday 4/5/11 4:11 by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks closed with losses across two of the three major indexes, with the rare bright spots coming from gold mining shares and semiconductor stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 12,394, -6.13, -0.05%) ended down 6.13 points, or 0.1%, to 12,393.9, with a 1% pullback in General Electric Co.
