WSJ pB5 "Economic data boost stocks" by Donna Yesalavich says stocks rose as investors were encouraged by the latest round of economic data, although a lower than expected profit from Google weighed on the tech sector. Bank of America is charted saying earnings season kicked off Mon with disappointing 1Q results from Alcoa & more dissatisfaction followed Fri's reports from Google & Bank of America. BofA is charted.

Fin Times p14 "Bank of America hurt by pressure from mortgages" by Michael Stothard says disappointing results from Bank of America & Google weighed on the fin'l & tech sectors, but strong manufacturing & consumer sentiment data left the wider markets higher int he final session of a lacklustre week for US equities. JPMorgan was down 4.2% despite releasing quarterly results on Wed tha t beat forecasts. Bank of America shares have fallen 33.9% in the past year, the worst performing stock in the 24 firm BKX banking index thanks partly to worries over its mortgage liabilities.

As of the close of the market Saturday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B5 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.86 up from Friday's trailing P/E of 14.79 (year ago it was 17.12); the P/E estimate is 12.65 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.73 (year ago it was 14.00), and the dividend yield is 2.38 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.39 (last year it was 2.48). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,630.72 up 6.99 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,623.23. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.36 up 0.25 from Thursday's average closing price of $54.11. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.05 (AXP/JPM) down 0.37 from Thursday's median closing price of $45.42. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $92.82 -0.12 0.13% 3,077,787 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $12.82 -0.31 2.36% 263,938,553 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $699 ($162,323 $163,022).

MarketWatch Friday 4/15/1 5:03 pm by Wallace Witkowski & Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks closed up Friday as favorable economic reports balanced out disappointing earnings results, but it wasn’t enough give the Dow industrials its fourth consecutive weekly gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 12,341.83, +56.68, +0.46%) rose 57 points, or 0.5%, to close at 12,342, with 20 of its 30 components rising. For the week, however, the Dow is off 0.3% to snap a three-week run of weekly gains. Leading the Dow was Merck & Co. (MRK 34.42, -0.09, -0.26%) , with shares up 1.9%, after the drug maker settled with Johnson & Johnson Inc. (JNJ 60.56, +0.54, +0.90%) over a disputed arthritis medication. The gains in stocks on Friday came as a measure of consumer sentiment rose in April, beating forecasts. Core consumer prices climbing a modest 0.1% in March, according to the Labor Department, which provide the Federal Reserve with breathing space to continue its $600 billion bond buying program. Also released Friday was data showing that manufacturing in the New York region climbed to a one-year high in April on a surge of new orders. Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Avalon Partners in New York, said the data along with indications the Fed will not tighten monetary policy anytime soon allowed the market to overcome less-than-starry earnings results. U.S. consumer prices keep rising in March as gasoline and food prices move higher, but underlying inflation remains tame. Earlier, Chicago Federal Reserve President Charles Evans said as long as core inflation remained at 1.5% or lower he was “extremely doubtful” the Fed would adjust its monetary policy. “The bottom line is that the good economy and cheap money will continue to bolster the stock market,” Cardillo said. The biggest drag on the blue chips, Bank of America (BAC 12.87, +0.05, +0.39%) , saw its shares fall 2.4% after its first-quarter profit missed expectations and the bank said its chief risk officer would move up to become its chief financial officer. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (SPX 1,319.68, +5.16, +0.39%) rose 5.2 points, or 0.4%, to close at 1,319.68, with technology the hardest hit and utilities the best performing among its 10 industry sectors. For the week, the index fell 0.6% for its second weekly loss in a row. Utility stocks Ameren Corp. (AEE 28.83, +0.58, +2.05%) , Integrys Energy Group Inc. (TEG 50.63, +1.01, +2.04%) and DTE Energy Co. (DTE 49.34, +0.97, +2.01%) all finished the day up 2%. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,764.65, +4.43, +0.16%) climbed 4.4 points, or 0.2%, to close at 2,764.65, but for the week, the index fell 0.6%, its second weekly loss in a row. Dragging on tech stocks, Google (GOOG 530.33, -0.37, -0.07%) reported first-quarter earnings below Wall Street’s expectations late Thursday. Google shares dropped 8.3%. Both oil and gold settled higher on the day.
