The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Chevron CVX $107.78 -1.88 1.71% 6,511,328 NYSE.

WSJ pC6 "Stocks narrowly mixed" by Donna Kardos says blue chip stocks eked ou a slim gain, but other market measures fell slightly as investors traded cautiously ahead of 1Q corp earnings season which started after the market when Alcoa reported earnings topped analysts' expectations, although sales growth wasn't as strong as they expected. Alcoa fell 15 cents and after trading fell 3%. The energy sector was the weakest sector as Chevron fell $1.88 and Exxon fell 79 cents.

NYT pB9 "Earnings optimism checked by oil prices" by Reuters says stocks mostly fell on Mon as energy shares sold off on lower oil prices & the onset of earnings season was clouded by concern that company outlooks may fall short of expectations. After the bell, Alcoa reported a 1Q profit that beat estimates and said its outlook for the rest of '11 remain positive.

Fin Times p22 "Endo move for AMS helps add to vigour of US healtcare sector" by Michael Stothard says Endo buying AMS lifted the healthcare sector but the wider markets lost ground, led by commodity stocks after the IMF cut its growth forecast for the US & Japan.

USA Today p4B "Stocks flat as growth forecasts lowered" by Bloomberg says stocks slipped Mon after oil dropped from a 30 monthhigh as the IMF cut its growth forecasts for the world's largest economy.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,635.90 up 0.13 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,635.77. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. MarketWatch Monday 4/11/1 4:17 by Donna Kardos says U.S. blue-chip stocks eked out a slim gain Monday but other market measures fell slightly as investors traded cautiously ahead of the first-quarter corporate-earnings season. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 1.06 points, or 0.01%, to 12381.11. The Nasdaq Composite shed 8.91, or 0.32%, to 2771.51. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index slipped 3.71, or 0.28%, to 1324.46. The mixed activity came as investors looked ahead to the first-quarter earnings season, which kicked off unofficially Monday afternoon with Alcoa's report after the market close. Shares of the aluminum giant fell 15 cents, or 0.8%, to $17.77, prior to the company's release. Investors are generally expecting first-quarter earnings to come in strong, but they are concerned about the impact of rising food and energy prices. "There's some trepidation at this point in time," said Tim Evnin, partner and equity portfolio manager at Evercore Wealth Management. "The market is obviously up nicely on the year already and obviously up tremendously from its lows ... you continue to need strong earnings to support the markets here."
