Post No. 988 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of April 24, 2011 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of April 24, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,595.37 up 115.49 or 0.93% from Monday's close of 12,505.59. Of the 30 Dow components 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $111.94 +3.09 2.84% 6,655,640 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Coke KO $66.93 -0.81 1.2% 16,339,257 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $12.23 -0.21 1.69% 146,170,676 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.67 down from Monday's trailing P/E of 14.70 (year ago it was 17.18); the P/E estimate is 12.68 up from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.65 (year ago it was 14.10), and the dividend yield is 2.36 up from Monday's dividend yield of 2.35 (last year it was 2.45). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,664.22 up 15.27 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,648.95. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.47 up 0.50 from Monday's average closing price of $54.97. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.11 (AXP/JPM) up 0.26 from Monday's median closing price of $45.85. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $87.86 +1.32 1.53% 5,611,109 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $12.23 -0.21 1.69% 146,170,676 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,527 ($166,422 - $165,236).

MarketWatch Tuesday 4/26/1 5:04 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rallied Tuesday, lifting the three benchmark indexes to 2011 highs, as investors embraced results from Ford Motor Co., United Parcel Service Inc., 3M Co. and others. “Revenues and earnings for nonfinancial companies have reached record levels, helped by international exposure for many S&P 500 reporting companies,” said Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Cos. Rebounding from Monday’s losses, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 115.49 points, or 0.9%, to 12,595.37 — its highest end since June 5, 2008. Gold and the dollar have moved in opposite directions this year. But over a longer period, the dollar has accounted for only a quarter of gold's moves, says Mark Hulbert, who notes gold's record run may have more to do with global currencies losing value. Blue-chip gains were led by Caterpillar Inc. and Intel Corp. Among the 24 stocks gaining on the Dow, 3M shares rose 1.9% after the conglomerate raised its 2011 earnings forecast, even as it took a hit from Japan’s ongoing crisis. Dow component International Business Machines Corp. said it would raise its quarterly dividend 15%. Shares of the technology bellwether edged up 0.5%. Bank of America Corp. and Coca-Cola Co. shares led decliners. Coca-Cola shares slid 1.2% after the beverage maker reported a rise in quarterly profit that missed analysts’ expectations. Away from the Dow, shipper UPS also raised its earnings estimate for 2011 and reported quarterly results that beat expectations. Shares gained 0.9%. Ford’s shares rose 0.8% after the auto maker reported its best first quarter in more than a decade. The S&P 500 Index added 11.99 points, or 0.9%, to 1,347.24, with industrials leading an advance that included all 10 of the index’s industry groups. It was the highest close for the index since June 17, 2008. “We finally reached the Promised Land of 1,344. It seemed like we were wandering for 40 years, but it was only a little more than eight weeks,” noted Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 21.66 points, or 0.8%, to 2,847.54, its highest close since October 31, 2007. The Federal Reserve is likely to begin closing a wide-open credit spigot this week-but faces a major decision: when to start draining the excess credit out of the economy by raising interest rates. For every stock falling, nearly three gained on the New York Stock exchange, where 909 million shares traded hands. As equities surged, commodities snapped a four-session advance, with oil slipping 0.1% to $112.21 a barrel and gold dropping more than $5 to $1,503.50 an ounce. Stocks retained the bulk of their gains after a monthly survey showed consumer confidence rising more than expected in April as worries about inflation and employment eased. “A still-improving labor market seems to be offsetting the rise in gasoline and food prices for now in terms of consumer psyche, as the confidence level is the second best since early ’08,” wrote Miller Tabak equity strategist Peter Boockvar. Before the opening bell, another survey had U.S. home prices falling for an eighth straight month. On Wednesday, the Federal Open Market Committee will conclude its two-day meeting on monetary policy, with Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke presiding over the first-ever news conference following the policy statement, slated for 2:15 p.m. Eastern. “Whatever thunder the FOMC meeting usually has is being stolen this week by the first of Bernanke’s press conferences,” said Marc Chandler, global head of currency strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman. Still, “investors are unlikely to learn from Bernanke when the Fed will tighten, as it is doubtful that he himself knows,” he added.
