As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.50 up from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.44 (year ago it was 14.64); Tuesday's P/E estimate is 12.39 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.39 (year ago it was 12.42) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.52 unchanged from Monday's dividend yield of 2.52 (last year it was 2.42). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,712.39 up 5.1 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,707.38. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.08 up $0.17 from Friday's average closing price of $56.91. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.18 (DD/HD)up $0.38 from Friday's median closing price of $49.80. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $87.54 +0.74 0.85% 1,813,167 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $7.975 -0.075 0.93% 156,147,483 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $510 ($171,239 - $170,738).

MarketWatch Monday 3/12/12 4:08 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks managed moderate gains in low volume Monday, pushing the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.29% to its fourth straight win. The Dow average rose 37.69 points, or 0.3%, to 12,959.71, its longest string of gains since the win streak ended Jan. 20. The S&P 500 SPX +0.02% inched up 0.22 point to 1,371.09. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.16% fell 4.68 points, or 0.2%, to 2,983.66. New York Stock Exchange volume was 611 million with 3 billion NYSE-listed shares trading hands, or about 80% of the last month's average. With a light U.S. economic and corporate calendar, investors traded cautiously ahead of bigger events this week, including Tuesday's Federal Reserve meeting.
